The bible explains that the natural man, the fool, denies God in his heart: "The fool says in his heart, ´There is no God.´ They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.", Psalm 14:1.

Not everyone can perceive immaterial truths as God or wisdom explain the bible. This is why Saint Augustine studies the problem of the perception of intelligible truths.
Saint Augustine in his book "The Teacher", Chapter XII explains to us how men learn from the truths. We perceive things with reason or with the senses, explains Agustine, we call to the first, sensitive or carnal, to the second intellectual or spiritual.
Then he says that when we contemplate things, we can only perceive them when we are enlightened by the so-called "inner man" or "inner teacher". Saint Augustine adds that the disciple learns from the teacher when he discovers in his interior that true things have been taught, the disciple is actually a disciple of the inner truth, the disciple learns, when he seeks and finds in his mind, that inner truth that is illuminated by his inner Master.
This is why the concept of spirit appears in the bible, when we have the spirit we can perceive God within us, the spirit is the divine substance according to Thomas Aquinas.
According to the teachings of Jesus, the Holy Spirit is the "Teacher":
"But you are not to be called Master, for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth "father", for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah", Matthew 23:8-10.
The holy spirit also acts as an inner advocate, guiding the conscience of the believer:
"But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time, you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you" Matthew 10:19-20.
The sinner, the fool, by his sin has broken his relationship with God and cannot perceive the spiritual realities: "But your iniquities have separated you from God", Isaiah 59:2.
