The apostle John is the disciple most loved by the Lord Jesus, this is why the apostle places such emphasis on love. In his second epistle John affirms: "It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.", 2 John 2:4-6.
But John is not talking about the commandments of the Law of Moses, but the commandments of Jesus. Jesus reduces the commandments to just two:
"Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind". This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: "Love your neighbor as yourself". All the law and the prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22: 34-40
For Jesus the commandments of the Law of Moses are impossible to fulfill, what happens when mercy opposes the justice that comes from the Law? Jesus heals the sick even on Saturday, and when they remind him that this is against the Law, Jesus responds: "The sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.", Mark 2:27.
When the apostle John speaks of love, he speaks of love for wisdom. God is the wisdom itself, talk about wisdom is talk about God. In fact this concept is identical to the Greek concept of philosophy, philosophy means love for the wisdom, the first science.
And this new commandment is the fulfillment of all the law because this love is the love that is projected towards others and towards all the work of God.
