What is Space Holding?
When holding space, you are creating a safe container. What this container looks & feels like will vary greatly depending on the situation. One example of space holding is in ceremony facilitation. A ceremonialist creates a transparent, loving, empowering, & confidential space where everyone can share free from judgement. Once the safe space has been created, the ceremonialist monitors the energy of the space to ensure that it maintains in alignment with the space’s original intention.
Holding space is also incredibly important in one-on-one interactions, especially when you are speaking to someone who is moving through a difficult time. In order for someone to work through sadness, pain, trauma, anger, & fear in a healthy & efficient manner- a safe space for sharing must first be established. Holding space for another when they are going through a challenging time is a learned skill.
What is your reaction when someone approaches you with feelings of intense depression, guilt, shame, or grief? Does it make you uncomfortable to he tar their story, would you rather help them shift it to a positive perspective? Or are you able to witness their story without judgement & attachment?
It is important to bring conscious awareness to the way we listen & interact in conversation. For many, it is instinctual to listen in order to respond. We go about our day-to-day conversation without much thought, “small talk”. We banter back & forth, there a few pauses, & response is rapid. We shift out of mode of mindless communication when we bring intention to our listening & invoke the Sacred Witness.
The Sacred Witness
When we invoke the Sacred Witness, we drop into a place of deep, present listening. We drop out of our minds & truly tune into the person whom is sharing. We listen with intent, empathy, & unconditional love.
We aren’t listening to what is being shared & running it through our own belief system. We aren’t thinking of how we want to respond or advice that we can give to make the situation better. We are listening to what is being shared & accepting it as that person’s reality. It doesn’t matter if you agree or disagree with what is being said. All that matters is that you are giving someone a safe space to share their truth without judgment.
Take the ego out of it!
We are not here to heal anyone.
We are not here to solve anyone else’s problems.
We are here to hold space for each other while we remember how to heal ourselves.
True empowerment comes from within. We empower others when we allow them to heal themselves. By all means, a loving support unit is absolutely necessary in order to thrive in our most optimum existence. However, for one to truly shift into a new level of awareness, the change must come from their innate being, not from the suggestion of an outside source.
Why is Sacred Sharing Needed?
In our modern society, there isn’t enough time dedicated to sharing & listening. Many people are living their lives totally separate from their souls, their bodies, the planet, & the collective. And yet, we are moving through a paradigm shift where the masses are reawakening to the divinity themselves. This transitional time can be very triggering. Everything is coming to the surface, everything is coming into the light to be transmuted.
We reconnect to ourselves when we activate our voices. Having a place to share free from judgment is totally transformative. We are able to come to new places of understanding, unravel stories & traumas, & create diverse problem solving skills when just allow ourselves to speak without filters. We find that the things we were once worried about it our heads find simple conclusions when we “talk it out”.
When we gather with the intention of sharing our truths, immense healing takes place. When we drop into the Archetype of the Sacred Witness & honor each person’s shares as their Divine Truth, unconditional love & forgiveness overflows.

Thank you for this post :) I've found holding space within relationships with others is so beneficial. Unfortunately the ego likes to believe everything is personal, and must defend itself and its ideas. Like anything, with practice it becomes second nature. ☄

Thank you so much for receiving! It is such a crucial part of cohesive relationships for me. Indeed, the ego is often apt to take things personally & can be easily offended. I definitely still work thru some of that myself. Small steps, everyday:) Like you said.. practice, practice practice! Check out the video that I just put in the original post. I forgot to include it when I posted the article initially:)
