The soccer section of FC Barcelona (whose official name in Catalan is Futbol Club Barcelona and the diminutive Barça) is a Spanish football club founded in 1899, which plays in the Spanish Football Championship.
Barça is the most titled European club of the twenty-first century [2] and one of the most successful clubs in history: its track record earned it third place in the European ranking of football clubs of the twentieth century. Established in the stadium of Camp Nou, which replaced the stadium of Corts in 1957, the Blaugranas [note 1] have won twenty-four championships, twenty-nine Spanish Cups, five leagues champions, four Cup Winners Cups, three Fair City Cups and three Club World Cups.
The history of FC Barcelona has made it one of the flag bearers of Catalonia and Catalanism, a role emphasized by its motto "as a club" [note 2]. This does not prevent the club from having supporters throughout the country and even outside Spain. It feeds a very old and deep rivalry with Real Madrid, the club of the Spanish capital. Their duel, known as El Clásico, regularly decides the outcome of the Spanish league, whose two clubs dominate the list. The two institutions are also the only ones, with Athletic Bilbao, to have participated in all editions of the Primera División since its creation in 1929.
