Hi everyone,
I usually dedicate the last post of the day to promoting my beautiful homeland, the Czech Republic, through my Travel Tip series but I will make an exception today as I want to introduce you to someone who has just promoted my country in a truly fascinating fashion.
If you followed the 2018 Winter Olympics (held between 9 and 27 February in South Korea), you are probably familiar with the incredible feat performed by Ester Ledecka, a young snowboardist from the Czech Republic.
At the age of just 22, Ledecka was the first athlete ever to compete at the Winter Olympics in both alpine skiing and snowboarding.

On February 17, she shocked the whole sport world when she won the gold medal in the female skiing Super-G event and one week later, on February 24, she won another gold medal in the snowboarding parallel giant slalom (her prime discipline).

Thanks to these unbelievable achievements, she became the first female Winter Olympian ever to win the gold in two separate sports at a single tournament. Ledecka also became the first competitor (male or female) to win Winter Olympics golds in two totally unrelated sport disciplines.
What makes her achievement even more outstanding is the fact that she actually won the Super-G on second-hand skis that belonged to an American athlete Mikaella Schiffrin before.
Ledecka´s inspirational performance at the 2018 Winter Olympics made her a national hero in the Czech Republic overnight. She also went viral on the internet as thousands of memes featuring her have flooded the web as soon as she finished her remarkable double-gold run.

Taky, jako každý Čech, jsem na Ester hrdý. Už před touto olympiádou jsem říkal, že medaili mít bude i z alpského lyžování... Ale spíš na další olympiádě, protože si myslím, že nakonec skončí pouze u alpského lyžování s příležitostným SNB.
No ale holko na to nechtěla tak dlouho čekat a udělala zlato už teď. Co k tomu říct, když už se vše řeklo. Asi nic. Proto raději budu už mlčet :-).

Just read some articles on Ester.. she was all over seznam ( the one czech site I read ) Was really hoping the hockey team coulda got it done againts the athletes from Russia.. one day we'll be back in the medals for hockey.

So glad you featured this story. Truly outstanding, and one of the great achievements in Olympic history.
She was a favourite in her primary sport, the snowboard slalom, so that was no surprise (though still no easy victory), but she shocked everyone (and most especially herself) by winning the Super G. Her reaction to seeing her time at the bottom of the hill was priceless, "there must be some mistake?", but it was clear that she had skied a perfect run. The sports are not unrelated, so she was able to take the same giant slalom principles and apply them to a different medium, but her ability to reach the top of the podium in such a short period of time against athletes who have spent their whole lives training on skis is quite remarkable and inspiring.

I've always had a special admiration for athletes who compete professionally or at the top level in different sports, because it's a rare talent who can balance different disciplines. Clara Hughes (cycling and speed skating) and Deion Sanders (played in the MLB and NFL at the same time) come to mind, but there aren't many others! Have a good day yourself!

Outstanding performance of this young woman indeed! Do you know if she stays active in both sports? We had a woman who managed to win gold and bronze at these olympics in 2 disciplines. Jorien ter Mors is one of our heros:D those things make the olympics so special and the party continues with the paralympics!
