Should Mackenzie Dern move up to flyweight?

in sport •  7 years ago

“My manager said the UFC wants me to move up in weight,” Dern said in her post-fight interview. “I believe that’s what they want. UFC matchmaker Mick Maynard called me and said we have an institute here in Vegas, and we’re going to invest in you, we want you here, we’re going to work with you, so I said OK I’m going to work for you guys.”

I don't know what the problem is. She's a Flyweight. The 125 Division is up for grabs and needs talent. She's not a strawweight. Fight in your real Division and you won't continually have these problems. Kelvin finally went to his proper Division and he's doing well. What's the benefit of beating up obviously smaller opponents? Does that win you true fans who don't just value the numbers in your win column, but more the adversity you defeated?

Dern always looks one weight Division bigger. That right there in such a light Division is a huge percentage of your body weight. It changes everything. We see this with the men too. Speed vs Power. The bigger guys have the KO power while the smaller guys have to be much more technical and conditioned.

Yes, she’s missed weight a number of times now and it’s normally by a big amount, that 7lbs over is ridiculous, and she didn’t look gaunt or dehydrated. To be honest, I know it could just be her body, but at her last fight it looked like she had some extra fat to loose. Not body shaming at all haha just being honest, she has excess fat to loose, like easy 3-4lbs that would make the cut much easier. She can fight at 115 but she needs to loose 5-10lbs before the cut. She must be walking around at what like 140?

About the fat thing, I’ve though that about many fighters, such as DC. He’s one of the best, so many he’s not a good example but he struggles to make 205 but still carries quite a bit of fat. I don’t know how some of the ‘fatter’ fighters (noticeably heavyweights) maintain that fat with all of the training and cardio work

I agree. If she wants to be successful in the UFC she needs some lean muscles and to lose body fat.
