Blast from the past - Safari Rally 1995

in sport •  5 years ago

Hi, friends!

Edition of Safari Rally 1995 wasn't for top class of rallying - group A8 which is similar to the current WRC class. That year it was counted in points only for class A7 which is front wheel drive with engines of 2000ccm without turbo.

What is most silly is that only two cars in that class were entered - one Daewoo (which won it's class as the only finisher) and one VW Golf which retired at some point of the rally.

Class A8 was also allowed to enter the rally but wasn't count for WRC points.

And that class A8 was the most interesting because the winner of that rally Yoshio Fujimoto who was works Toyota driver then spent five months in Kenya preparing for the rally. .

He passed 3000km long route eight times to learn it as much as possible. During the rally he rolled the car and still managed to win.

Yoshio Fujimoto drove for Toyota until the end of his rallying career which was in 1998 when he won Asian-Pacific Rally Championship driving Toyota Corolla WRC.
