Dana White owner of the UFC mixed martial arts franchise recently announced he will be returning to focus on boxing after the success of Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor. This has been confirmed in as White told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday he's "getting into boxing, 100 percent" and is currently looking into obtaining a promoter's license.
When asked about whether this meant he will be leaving the UFC to focus on boxing full time, he had this to say, "No, no, no, I'm not leaving the UFC," White said. "I'm getting into boxing with [new UFC owner and WME-IMG head] Ari [Emanuel] and the UFC will be doing boxing, too.”
"It's still early. We're still working on it. I've got to get my [stuff] together, but I'm getting into boxing, man. It's coming."
Dana White could make much more money as a Boxing Promoter
Before the UFC White previously worked as a Boston-based trainer and gym owner but was forced to flee town and move back to Las Vegas after angering the mafia. White later went on to become MMA manager which became a stepping stone towards greater success when he was able to forge a partnership with casino heirs Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta -- owners of parent company Zuffa, LLC – and shortly after made their 2001 purchase of UFC.
The story gets even better as through a lot of hard work by all parties in expanding the popularity of the sport, the Fertittas turned their $2 million purchase of UFC into $4.025 billion selling the UFC last July to a Hollywood agency called WME-IMG. This is the point at which White was able to convert his stake of UFC ownership into a reported $400 million while remaining in the spotlight to represent the UFC as its main spokesperson.
White wants to earn the same as the likes of Oscar De La Hoya
Of course other promoters are taking note and this type of power play by White generates a lot of jealousy and envy. For example, after White proposed the idea of entering boxing last month, Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank said this was a desperate move and a shameless attempt to pad his pockets, noting the fact that the UFC had pathetic PPV sales in 2017.
Time will tell if White will be able to successfully make his move back into the spotlight as a world class boxing promoter. Certainly this most recent success with Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor has given him a bit of confidence in this move and the ambition to move towards bigger paydays.
