I Don't Think Mayweather Would Throw The Fight (It's Possible, of course, but let me tell you why it's not likely) And I Still Think McGregor Will Lose

in sports •  7 years ago  (edited)

So, I previously wrote an article regarding why I think Conor McGregor doesn't have much of a chance at all against Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match.

https://steemit.com/boxing/@biddle/conor-mcgregor-and-his-000001-chance-against-floyd-mayweather-in-a-boxing-match

It was one of my first posts on steemit.com and one of the main points that I made regarding a tiny chance for McGregor was:

"RIGGED FIGHTS:

I think that Mayweather is a proud guy and I don't see him throwing the fight, as it would tarnish the reputation of boxing and tarnish his reputation for the rest of time. That being said, if he likes money more than he is proud, he could throw the fight. He will no doubt make at least 100 million dollars on this fight (he made around 400 million from what I understand with Pacquiao). If he chose to throw the fight, that is almost a GUARANTEE of a rematch (unless McGregor has no integrity), which means an additional $100 million+ payday for Mayweather. This is another small chance for McGregor to win."

Now, I'd like to recant that. The reason I heavily doubt now that either fighter would throw the fight is because of the fact that this fight is sort of a fight about 'which is better, boxing or mma boxing, at boxing'. It is not JUST a fight about that, but that is definitely one of the discussions being had. People want to see 'who would win in a boxing match - boxer or mma'. At first glance (and imho), the boxer wins almost every time because that is their training, but there are strong opponents of that thought; many think that MMA fighters are just all-around better and it is a new evolution with newly evolved fighters that are better in every way at fighting. I think that's ridiculous, but some don't.

So, because this is 'MMA vs Boxing', the powers that be would not trade their entire sport away for a follow-up match. Now, if Conor loses, which I find likely, it doesn't hurt MMA, because it is expected. If Floyd loses, it will HURT boxing and could hurt the bottom line, money, for a long time to come. It will surge sales for UFC/MMA, it will hurt sales for boxing. Due to these two things, I'm not sure that they would want to throw the fight. That being said, an under-the-table, man-to-man/camp-to-camp agreement to throw, behind the backs of the boxing powers-that-be could cause a rigging to occur. But, based on what I've said, I don't think the fight will be rigged.

Personally, I'll laugh if McGregor wins, myself being an MMA proponent, as well as not a fan of Mayweather (I prayed that Manny would beat him), but I don't see it happening. I'm not really cheering for either fighter, although I would like my analysis to be given strength, by showing that my thoughts were spot-on. We shall see. I do give McGregor the puncher's chance still, but I don't think he'll win.

I still give McGregor a puncher's chance:

"THE PUNCHER'S CHANCE:

The reason I give Conor McGregor a 'near 0%' rather than a 0% chance is only because of the puncher's chance. Any fighter who gets in the ring with another fighter has a chance to knock the person out as long as they can throw a reasonably hard punch. People make mistakes and people get lucky; McGregor could get a lucky shot or Mayweather could have a fuck up of epic proportions. This means that McGregor could win. I'm just trying to point out the obvious, which is that he is not LIKELY going to win."

Please read the full analysis if you disagree about why McGregor should win, as the old analysis breaks down the main things that people are arguing for Conor's advantage/chance. :) I'm happy to hear differing opinions of course, just please be respectful, for the sake of everyone! :) Also, for those who agree, if you've had a hard time articulating your opinion to your friends as to the many reasons McGregor will be hard pressed to win, point them to my article to give them the what for! ;) :)

What are your thoughts on the matter? Are you going to be tuning in for the fight!? Who do you have winning and why?

Again, for those looking for my other analysis, you can find it at https://steemit.com/boxing/@biddle/conor-mcgregor-and-his-000001-chance-against-floyd-mayweather-in-a-boxing-match ! :)

Mayweather, for taking care of his bill fold above anything else. Which is why McGregor can take this fight by knockout.

Lets fight :)

Amen! I'm excited to see it, if nothing else!

I don't think there is any chance of Mayweather throwing the fight. His legacy is way too important to him, as is his undefeated record. If he wins , he retires 50-0, which would beat rocky marcianos undefeated record of 49-0, and would further add to his legacy.

Mayweather is also worth a fortune so he does not need the money, i believe he is getting in the region 175 mil from this fight, plus add to that the 100s of millions from his past fights.

The Mayweather name is a brand all of its own, that is synonymous with being undefeated, and is used to promote his boxing promotion company and his many advertising deals, i believe he also has a clothing line, to lose would seriously damage that brand and lose him money in the long term.

The man constantly rants on about being the goat or tbe, so i would highly doubt he would throw the fight and his legacy away, but there could be rigging in terms of referee and judges who have nowhere near the vast fortunes of both fighters and don't have the same invested interest of blood, sweat, and tears.

I will probs watch the fight but i don't expect much from it, there is better fight in terms of boxing and contest on the same night miguel cotto vs yoshihiro kamegai, but due to the interest i probs watch the mayweather fight.

Before reading your article the thought of rigging had not even occurred to me, you raised some interesting thoughts . Ps. Just a thought You should leave a link to your old analysis at the bottom of this one to make it easy for readers to find.

Interesting analysis... As I recall the fight again Pacquiao, a quick puncher, but did not have real chance to hit reach to Mayweather. Compared to Pacquiao, McGregor is not that fast

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Thanks! :) and Exactly, and Pacquiao is one of the best boxers of ALL TIME too! Mayweather has fought the fastest boxers and always came out on top; he's fought reach, size, speed, strength, and he always wins. McGregor will be HARD pressed to win this, imho. :)

Don't forget Pacquiao was well past his prime when he fought Mayweather, and was distracted by politics. In fact Mayweather wouldn't fight him in his (Pacquiao's) prime. This is the theme of Mayweather's career - everything has to be right for him. And this is partly why he'll beat McGregor.

Though I hope I'm wrong.

Very true that Pacquiao was past his prime! I was so bummed when he lost though. But very true, again, it's in his favor so I'd be surprised if he loses. But yeah, I'll definitely laugh if McGregor beats him and will start the meme onslaught that will go from the loss of the match until 2018.

Boxing fans around at the time still remember "no hoper" Lloyd Honeyghan beating the great Don Curry in 1986. Also few gave James Douglas any hope against Iron Mike Tyson.

So get those creative juices flowing just in case. By 2018 you could have 2000 followers!

Yeah, in a fight, the unexpected can always occur! :)

The both of them are fire.

It's going to be amazing.

I'm excited to watch for sure!

Which way?
Maybe Mayweather.

Thanks for the upvote! That's my bet too, but strange things can happen! I'm looking forward to seeing it!

The fight been done, I'm disapointed in Mc Gregor, it looked like he was too causious... Although he had not much to lose, because boxing rules were imposed on him...
