Fanny Blankers-Koen- The Dutch Flying Housewife

in sports •  7 years ago

Check out the story behind today's Google doodle. It is a caricature of Fanny Blankers-Koen, the 30 year old mother of two, pregnant with her third child, who won 4 gold medals at the 1948 Olympics. She held world records in 2 other events, but was limited to 3 individual events because of a rule limiting women to protect their delicate and fragile bodies from overuse. She was criticized in the press for leaving her two young boys at home to compete. Her best years were lost to World War II when the Olympics were not held in 1944, and was declared the female athlete of the century by the International Association of Athletics Federations, and died at age 85. She would have been 100 today. Here is a link to an article about her athletic career. https://edition.cnn.com/2018/04/26/sport/fanny-blankers-koen-google-doodle-spt/index.html
