Go Cubs Go! Or why a DC boy is a Cubs fan!

No not education, no not politics. Today I can only keep one thing on my mind and it is Game 7. This is my brother Matt's fault. See he took me to that cathedral of America's Pastime, the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field and I fell in love before I got halfway through Wrigleyville from the L. It was like a family reunion with 40,000 of your closest relatives. You walk through and you feel it. The history resonates with your heart. Ernie Banks, Fergie Jenkins, Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg, Greg Maddux and Mordecai Brown. I bought my Cubs gear before I even got into Wrigley (Matt was there and will tell you it was not a tough sell - Matt's response: Definitely true. You were quite partial to the Cubs before we even set foot inside Wrigley and it was an easy sell. Only true fans were there that day though; it was COLD!), I always liked the Cubs, but now I loved them. I think Red Sox fans can understand how important the field is. I never understood teams like the Yankees or the Orioles tearing down so much history. Their stadiums were amazing (though Memorial was in a really crappy neighborhood).

I poured my heart into the Cubs. I am still a hockey fan, but now hockey doesn't start until baseball is over. For me it is over when the Cubs finish. When hockey is over, baseball starts. I also pull for Everton and FC Bayern Munich but that is another post. When I was a little boy I liked the Senators, and when they left I learned to hate the Orioles. Their ownership group would not allow a team to come to DC. When they finally relented, they took money from the Nationals and I hated them more. So I watched teams from where I was stationed in the military and rooted for the teams that could not get it together. I still have a soft spot for the Indians and Mariners. And of course the Cubs, starting in the 80s I would turn on WGN when I got home from work and watch the last few innings. I still think Harry was the best! Today I listen to games on MLB At Bat and watch the compressed game the next day.

When I started my full fledged fandom the Cubs lost, a lot. Thankfully they won when we were in Wrigley but more often than not it was the L being flown over Wrigley. But it did not matter, they have played since 1876 and that meant more to me than anything else. They epitomized everything about about the nation that took my family, the lovable losers, the ever opimistic hope of "maybe next year."

So tonight is it, GAME 7 baby. No matter what Cubs fans, hold your head high. What a team!
