Jimmy Garoppolo is the highest paid player in the NFL!!!!
Jimmy Garoppolo was just made the highest paid player ever in the NFL. Today he signed a contract with the San Francisco 49'ers that will pay him $137.5 (74) guaranteed)million dollars over the next 5 years. Thats a whopping $27.5 million per year. Garoppolo now out ranks superstars QB's such as Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers. The list could go on and on because as of this moment there is not another player in the league that makes as much.
Why??? What has he done to earn this kings ransom. Well, not much to be honest. Garoppolo has played in 6 full games for the 49'ers. Now mind you that he played extremely well in those games. He won 5 straight to end the season while putting up 1500 yards passing and throwing for 7 TD's. This was obviously enough to impress the 49'er management and ownership to break the bank. Before the midseason trade to San Fran for a 2nd round pick Garoppolo was the backup and air apparent to Tom Brady in New England. A trade that is mired with controversy as it seems to be the cause of a first in Patriot land.
To be honest I am shocked and blown away by this contract. How on earth do you give a guy with such little experience that contract. Look what happened in Houston just a few year ago with Brock!!! I hope it works out for them as they are a team that needs a revitalization but wow, what a huge risk. Finally, what does this mean for the next round of free agent QB's coming? There are players with a lot more talent, experience and stats that will be looking at teams and pointing at this contract during negotiations. The rich get richer!!!

It's going to be ridiculous. As a Broncos fan I have been touting how we need to go out and get Cousins at all cost and now they are going to have to pay through the nose!! What I can't help thinking about is 2020. The list of quarterbacks scheduled to become a UFA is scary. Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Jared Geoff, Carson Wentz, Phillip Rivers and a couple others who may or may not be still playing but age will keep the numbers down (Brady and Big Ben) Not to mention the QB's in line for a payout next year 2019, Matt Ryan, Janison Winston and Marcus Mariota.
San Francisco has just set a scary high floor for QB contracts!!

No problem, the sports community here isn't all that large at the moment unfortunately. As a lions fan it will make me feel better when Staffords contract looks better compared to everyone else due for a raise.
