I posted the above tweet on Twitter yesterday and it picked up some traction. By now you read about Floyd Mayweather posting a video of him entering an MMA cage. If you haven't, just check any of his social media accounts from yesterday, or read this post from FanSided MMA.
Also, if you were not already aware, Roy Jones Jr. is boxing his final match and it will be aired on UFC Fight Pass through a boxing/MMA streamed event on the UFC's streaming service. It could be the first time boxing has been on Fight Pass ever, and they have a marquee name like Jones on it. He also did a media day at the UFC Performance Institute where the "Zuffa Boxing" ring was featured prominently behind him. That event happens Thursday, February 8 for those interested. It is also a gateway to him possibly facing Anderson Silva, according to this LA Times article.
Finally, Lomachenko has been teasing a jump to the UFC by letting fans know he has a grappling background and posted some videos from his childhood, and a more recent one of him grappling now to let folks know he has skills outside of boxing. It makes you wonder, doesn't it? Is the UFC/Zuffa Boxing thing happening and if so, will it be a boxing promotion that just puts MMA fighters against boxers in a boxing ring?
As freakshow as it seems, it could be a nice way to open up the expansion of the Ali Act to MMA again so if that happens than it could be a win for all combat sports athletes. What do you guys think?
As much as I would like to see this happen, I just can't see the boxing world buying into it. Kinda like expecting the banks to buy into crypto......it would further weaken their slipping grasp on their respective market.
Grappling is so damn important to MMA and boxers may not be as unprepared as Art Jimmerson way back when, but will still not be able to fight MMA for the most part.
This will leave it to striker purists to abandon their kicks and ground game and play a one-dimensional slugfest boxing match.
It would be nice to see a hybrid approach but that has already been done and it is called Muay tai!
Will be fun but MMA is the way to go!

Art Jimmerson is the one I always bring up when folks try to argue "boxing versus..." that argument was settled with the first UFC.
