"It comes down to beating people up and winning fights." Robbie Lawler

in sports •  7 years ago

Robbie Lawler only reiterated what many long-time fans of MMA have noticed in the sport lately, and especially in the UFC. The fact that trash talk matters more than performance when it comes to the titles in the promotion.

However, guys like him; Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, and even the younger new competitors like Brian Ortega could bring Lawler's philosophy and what the sport was built on should always be, winning the fights that get you to a title. Ortega has 11-straight wins and is undefeated, yet when he submitted Cub Swanson in his post-fight interview he said he would not try to step in front of Frankie Edgar.

Maybe, in 2018 we could see the honor that has alwasy been associated with martial arts return to the sport in full force. That is not to say it is non-existant now, but the face of the UFC changed with the new owners and it has had an effect on how fights are matched and made.

"It comes down to beating people up and winning fights." -Lawler

Hard to argue with the man.
