Two hundred people signed up for the divisions, turning Buffalo Wild Wings into a bit of a madhouse- unfortunately this also caused a bit of confusion in the organization of the rounds.

Initially they were supposed to spread out the matches, alternating the youth divisions with the amateur and pro divisions, but due to a time constraint they chose to finish one division before starting another.

What happens in a case like that is serious arm fatigue. And they accidentally had Ethan wrestle three unnecessary matches on top of the dozen he was supposed to, and by the time he was wrestling for first place he had what's called an 'arm pump' which is where all the blood pools in the forearm and locks it up- he couldn't even close his fingers. Meanwhile the guy he had to wrestle had about fifteen minutes or more to recuperate...all of that to say he ended up taking Second place--which for his first tournament is pretty freaking spectacular IMO!

He also got to meet one of his idols, Pro Todd Hutchings, who drove up from Ohio to catch the event!

Along with Russian YouTuber and Arm Wrestler Alex "Top Roll" Beziazykov, a dude he's been watching for months :)

Some clips of his butt whoopings :)

Next step in his workout routine- a personal trainer! Turns out an old friend of ours went from fat body to body builder-

-and is now working as a trainer. He got a hold of us when he saw the posts on facebook and offered his services for a fraction of his usual cost--he starts today!

watch out World of Arm Wrestling, Ethan is coming for you all!!

It sure is, his next one is on Sunday :) He's starting a new fitness regimen with a trainer AND he just got a job as a landscaper- busy boy, lots of physical activity haha

wow lot of people came in there must be a memorable day

HA! I was just gonna say, "Now he just needs to start hitting the weights," and right down there at the bottom of the post is a damn good plan.

I know it! He's going to be a monster by the time he's 18!

I want to know more! Is there strategy to go along with arm strength? Does the strongest always win in the first match, before fatigue sets in, or is it likely that endurance plays a role even in the first match? How much variance in grip style is allowed and how much is regulated? Does it matter how you hold hands? What happens if the player hands slip out from each other, does someone win?

So many questions!

Hey there :) Absolutely there's strategy, you can be extremely strong and get beat by a skilled arm wrestler. Of course if you are skilled and extremely strong then generally you'll take out a weaker opponent no matter the skill. Endurance can come into play even in a first match, particularly among evenly matched people- Ethan's adding running to his regime for this reason, it increases blood flow in general along with wind.

When the match begins the ref positions their hands, it does matter. When you slip out it's a foul, three fouls and you lose the match. There are other ways to foul- I'd ask my son but he's off training lol. Actually for his final match, with the arm pump, he should have slipped out to give himself a breather, he realized it too late.

There are a lot of different styles and moves- the top roll (inside and outside-inside is back and shoulders, outside is tendons and muscles), the hook (inside and outside), the press, the post...Ethan posts a lot because he has a big strong frame, but he's working on some other stances, not sure of their names.

He'll be sixteen in a couple of weeks, which means he still has two years in the youth division- he's concerned he'll end up breaking some arms once he really becomes proficient because they don't really do weight class until the amateurs- it's possible they'll let him in early, at least when he's seventeen with some extra waivers signed.

Love the questions and the interest!

Wow! It's amazing the difference between arm wrestling as a competitive activity and as an occasional lark!

I know, right? An old friend of my hubs is widely known (in our area) for being the strongest dude in five counties, he used to wipe the floor with arm wrestling- but he never learned technique- power alone won't win him a match with my son at this point :)
