What Are The Best New Sports Cars of 2020

The best sports cars come in all shapes, sizes, and prices. No matter your particular tastes, we’re sure you can find something on this list of best sports cars of 2020 that will fulfill your craving for speed and performance.

*Mazda MX-5 Miata

Since its introduction in 1989, the Mazda MX-5 Miata has been beloved by drivers all over the world, and for 2020 this automotive icon continues to be the focused sports car we love. Its chassis is playful, its engine is eager to rev, and its standard manual transmission is a joy to use. Perhaps what's most enjoyable about the 2020 Miata is how analog it seems in the age of computer-controlled cars and SUVs. While it isn't a practical choice, it represents the best and most affordable four-wheeled thrill ride this side of a go-kart.

*Toyota Supra

Toyota revives the legendary Supra name and its brilliant performance to go along with it. Under its shapely hood lies a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that Toyota says makes 335 horsepower, but our testing revealed that number to be fairly conservative. No convertible version has been announced, so the 2020 Supra will be offered exclusively as a coupe. If you're looking for a drop-top sports car, consider the new BMW Z4, which is built alongside the Supra in Austria and shares the same underpinnings and powertrain. Despite sharing numerous parts, Toyota was able to give its version a personality all its own, which helped the Supra a spot on our 2020 10Best list.

Chevy Corvette

The long wait is finally over, and the new mid-engine 2020 Corvette is as good as we could have imagined. So good, in fact, that it earned a 10Best award right out of the gate. The eighth-generation Corvette (a.k.a. C8) now boasts an engine behind the passenger cabin, just like the best from Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren but at many thousands of dollars less. Incredibly, the base C8's pricing starts at $59,995, making it a relative bargain. Available as either a coupe with a removable roof panel or a convertible with a retractable hard top, the revolutionary Chevy has a 6.2-liter V-8 making 490 horsepower that endows it with supercar performance.

Porsche 718 Cayman

There's no point in wasting dreams or money on supercars when the 10Best-winning 2020 Porsche 718 Cayman provides a similarly stellar experience at a huge discount. Despite being near the bottom of the Porsche pyramid, the Cayman coupe and Boxster convertible (reviewed separately) are enthralling machines that provide unrivaled feedback to the driver. Its expertly tuned chassis is supplemented by three distinct flat-four-cylinder engines and either a trusty manual or telepathic automatic transmission. Every Cayman can be personalized with countless individual options and even retains a compliant ride when not racing down roads. Sure, its coarse engine notes and uninspired interior are drawbacks, but the 2020 Cayman isn't a wannabe supercar—it's just an attainable one.

Porsche 718 Boxster

Not everyone will understand the magnificence of the 2020 718 Boxster, especially compared with click-bait rivals such as the all-new 2020 Chevy Corvette. Still, those who have experienced the convertible Porsche's perfectly balanced chassis and serene steering will see the light and understand why it made our 10Best list again. Despite their rough-sounding engines, the Boxster's trio of turbocharged flat-fours will otherwise charm with speedy acceleration and a pair of terrific transmissions. This soft-top sports car isn't intended to be practical. No. The Boxster is meant to put its driver on a pedestal and redefine the sports car genre.

BMW M2

The BMW M2 is the distillation of everything that BMW knows about making the best sports cars: a creamy-smooth turbocharged inline-six engine, stellar handling, and incredible brakes. That engine makes 405 horsepower and teams up with a six-speed manual transmission; a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional. We took an M2 with the automatic transmission to our test track and went from zero to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds. The ride, however, can be punishingly harsh. Although the M2 is a four-seater, the back seat is too tight for taking adults on long trips. Overall, though, the M2 is one of the best sports cars you can buy today and one of the best sports cars for under $100,000. It's on our 10Best Cars list for 2019.

BMW Z4

The 2020 Z4 is back after a brief hiatus, and it's better than ever. The rear-wheel-drive two-seat roadster still falls short of the sublime Porsche Boxster for all-out speed and driving enjoyment, but it's a close second, offering extremely strong performance in a refined package that's enjoyable to drive every day. Its base price is also about $10,000 less than the Boxster's. This time around, the Z4 is offered only as a convertible—there is no longer a coupe version—and it's BMW's least expensive two-seater. This latest generation has also shed its heavy and complex retractable hard top for a more traditional folding soft top, but its interior seals tightly and remains quiet on the highway.

*Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

Think of the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT350 as a Mustang that has been spending time at the gym—a whole lot of time. Its sheetmetal curves and flexes in a way that we find irresistible. A rip-roaring 5.2-liter V-8 is under the hood and cranks out 526 horsepower; a six-speed manual is the only transmission available, and the clutch effort is minimal. In our testing, we rocketed to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds at 118 mph. The GT350 stops as good as it goes, braking from 70 mph in 153 feet and pulling 1.02 g's on the skidpad. It's one of the best sports cars made in America and one of the best sports cars for under $100,000.

Nothing beats taking out a sports car for a spirited romp on your favorite road, and this list includes the best models to facilitate that desire.
