The Jets made the first move by acquiring Davante Adams, another former Rodgers teammate. My Buffalo Bills went for Amari Cooper.
So, who won the battle of the trades between the two teams?
Well, who wins more games thanks in part to the trades will ultimately win. But, on paper, the winner is the Bills.
The Jets gave up a conditional 3rd round pick that could become a 2nd round pick depending on performance. That, and the Jets are eating the remainder of Adams' contract.
The Bills traded a 3rd round pick and a future 7th round pick to the Browns, and received Cooper and a 6th round pick in exchange.
The thing is, the Browns are paying the majority of Cooper's contract. The Bills are only on the hook for about $807k. Cooper is an UFA at the end of the season.
Granted, the way Adams' contract is structured, the Jets aren't paying much more this season; but, they have him on the books for two more seasons after this one. He's cutable after this season. But, if the Jets wanna keep him, he's gonna be a more than $20 million cap burden in a year when Sauce Gardner is gonna want to get paid, and he might be a factor when it's time to pay Breece Hall.
Look, I know that my Buffalo Bills have issues that we need to fix. Still, we're doing better than I expected this season. Teams can surprise you. The Cooper trade was probably made with the same idea in mind that the Rams had when they traded for Von Miller and picked up OBJ.
The Jets probably had the same thought process. Rodgers is forty. Even if it's completely unreasonable for them to believe that they're gonna win the big game this year, they have to believe it. Still, they moved first, and between the two receivers, they chose the guy who is slightly older and considerably more expensive.
The Jets may be eating their cake. The Bills are having their cake and eating it too.
