A few thoughts - some serious, others not so much:
Mayo is well-respected, but not clear he can do what needs to be done with the awful offense (his background is mostly on defense).
Roger Goodell will surely investigate the Patriots for possible violations of the Rooney Rule, because they didn't officially interview any white coaches for the job!
I might have preferred they hire Mike Vrabel. He knows the Patriots Way (played for them for several years), but also has a proven track record of success as a head coach elsewhere (even was the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year). Plus, knows more about offense than Mayo. Perhaps could have made Mayo the defensive coordinator.
Regardless, the offense sucks, and will be a long-term rebuilding project. Special teams is pretty bad too. If you want to be an NFL kicker, send your resume to the Patriots! You might well be better than Chad Ryland.
Bill Belichick is now out of a job, and Harvard is looking for a new president. Perhaps they should hire this legendary Boston icon. Belichick will surely wring better performance out of the dysfunctional Harvard bureaucracy. And making him the president will dispel accusations that Harvard is excessively "woke." Just don't let him have any role in hiring (he has a terrible recent record with the GM part of his job with the Pats).
For their part, perhaps Mayo and the Pats should hire disgraced former Harvard President Claudine Gay as their new offensive coordinator. She can't make the offense any worse than it already is (last in points scored this year). And in the NFL, unlike academia, there are no rules against plagiarism! She can copy plays from other coaches as much as she wants, with no need to cite the original. If the plays work, it's all good. Hiring her would also boost the Patriots' reputation in DEI circles. What's not to like?
