A huge story has broken in Rugby League in the last 24 hours with reports coming out and then being confirmed today that the Brisbane Broncos the biggest club in the National Rugby League making an audicious bid to sign current Melbourne Storm super coach Craig Bellamy on a huge 4 year deal. On the surface this looks like a no brainer for the Broncos signing the games premier coach long term to take over from the games greatest ever coach Wayne Bennett but when you delve deeper you see where the cracks appear.
Bellamys contract with the Storm is up at the end of this season and he has been table a 3 year deal from the Storm which has yet to sign, Bennetts deal with the Broncos is until the end of 2019, this is where things get tricky. Bennett has won 6 premierships as coach of the Broncos and is part of the fabric of the club, to tap him on the shoulder and sack him from the final year of his contract would be showing the master a great deal of disrespect. The other issue is Bellamy prepared to sit out a year of coaching and wait for Wayne to finish up so he can take over in 2020?
Bellamy is also the Melbourne Storms favourite son, delivering a number of Premierships and helping the game along with the big 3 of Cronk, Smith and Slater to become important in Melbourne, Bellamy will want to show Melbourne the appropriate respect as well and ensure the transition from him is smooth. This is a very delicate situation which everyone can now enjoy playing out in the next few weeks. My tip is Bellamy to be coaching the Broncos in 2020.
It's a question of whether Bellamy is going to be smart, or sentimental.
The Melbourne dynasty is coming to an end with some key retirements on the horizon. I'm not sure if Melbourne stays a Top 4 team without any of Slater, Cronk and Smith.
