I've seen Foles do a lot of great things over the years.
Actually I've hardly ever seen it, I've just seen the box scores roll in, and collected the money.
In the 2013 fantasy season we (co-managing with a friend of mine -- not the "royal we") had LeSean McCoy and Desean Jackson, both Eagles at the time, and a questionable quarterback situation.
The Eagles had the "high-powered Chip Kelly offense" that year, and when Michael Vick got injured and this Nick Foles character took over the starting job, my spider senses were alert. I shot an email to my co-manager friend about possibly adding him, and he quite fairly believed that Nick Foles kind of sucks.
My visions were shot down, but a few minutes before gametime I went rogue. I found a player who was clearly kind of expendable and wouldn't be that controversial to drop, and I stashed Foles.
Nick Foles threw 7 touchdowns that day, and the rest was history.
In fantasy football, having players from the same offense is a thing that works well sometimes.
If you have several players who compliment each other and who will generally rise or fall together, then you increase your upside and also your downside. And given that the goal is to win (to be 1st out of 12 or whatever amount of teams, and 5th is no better than last), you generally want that tradeoff. You want the high variance upside.
So it was kind of like "ifff he's good, combined with McCoy and Jackson, then all of a sudden we may have a juggernaut". (And if he was terrible, we were probably a failed team anyways, since he'd bring down McCoy and Jackson.)
And apparently I'm still pretty proud of myself 4 years later.
Little known facts
Nick Foles threw 27 touchdowns to 2 interceptions that year.
Finished the season with a 119.2 QB rating, which is the 3rd best all-time. (Sure it was a shortened season because Michael Vick played some of the games, but still.)
He threw seven touchdowns in one game!!!
He threw a "perfect" game, which landed him on a list of only 60 or so other quarterbacks to have done it. And I may or may not have written this section of the Wikipedia article which seems to illustrate his perfect game as the greatest of all of them (which it was).
Foles graduated from the same high school as the great Drew Brees.
Carson Wentz injury
So the Eagles are in a weird situation, where they're the number 1 seed and playing at home, but regarded as an underdog, now that they're using a "backup quarterback".
It's possible Foles just fit in to Chip Kelly's offense really well, or caught the better part of variance. But for all we know he has some ability to dig deep and zone in, and we'll see how he does later today!
A small little bet
For the most part I'm done sports betting for now. If anything I'll bet on the Super Bowl, if the Patriots make it. Anything I bet now is just gonna be a little nibble, but I'm not gonna sit here and watch Nick Foles make a title run and not have a little piece of it.
So I actually have all the underdogs this week (besides Titans/Patriots):
I have a little nibble on Saints (moneyline), a little nibble on Jaguars (+7, and also some on moneyline), and a bigger nibble on Eagles (mostly moneyline, and a little on +2.5).
Good luck to all the competitors.
Were midway through the first quarter as i write this. Id love to see Foles go all the way this year. Im a Packer fan so i have no ties to any teams left. But itd be a pretty unique story. Foles played at an MVP level, then became a journeyman backup. Now he has shot to win it all with his old team (now under a new regime). Carson Wentz was prob going to win MVP (or Brady). Eagles fans have had soooo much heartbreak over the years. If Foles can pull it together and win this, it will be one of the great stories ever.

Ya, you summed it up! It really is an awesome story and roller coaster ride. When I heard Wentz got injured I wondered who his backup was, for fantasy reasons, and then it was like "omg it's Foles".
Didn't expect a Nick Foles championship run to be in the cards this year, lol. Rooting for them next week too.

This is a good weekend to pick the underdogs since the matchups are so compelling. The Jaguars in particular are a team I am rooting for.
I had forgotten about Nick Foles’ 7 touchdown game - that makes the Falcons’ matchup all the more interesting.

ya, I basically feel like all the games could go either way.. often I lean towards favorites and only bet when I feel a strong hunch that I don't see them losing.
I could go 0-for-3 hehe, but none of the favorites really feel super secure to me.

Nice insight! No one could have seen Foles coming back then. And Carson Wentz is injured? Just hearing about that now. Poor Eagles. Can he still win MVP, though?

ya he got injured with a few games or so left in the regular season.. it seemed like he was on path to have a good shot to win MVP, but seems like people don't think he has much of a chance now, just from missing too many games
the great Tom Brady may end up winning it

Well that's a good consolation. If not Wentz, then the evergreen Tom. Your previous piece about him comes to mind. Poor Carson Wentz tho. Just saw its an ACL tear. Those are terrible. I remember when Derrick Rose had it. Messed up his career till now. Youngest MVP in league history for that matter.
Oh and I wish Foles all the best filling in. Can't wait to see what happens. Hope you win your bet!

watched him live at Univ. of Arizona..He is smart..real smart and great arm. I said 5 years ag o..(I'm a die hard giants fan)..draft him and get rid of ELI..people though I was nuts..(I'm no huge Eli fan..thanks

Nice! Ya, to my eye Eli isn't much of anything. Foles seems serviceable at worst, with clearly some upside.. and Eli isn't getting any younger lol
Having the "Manning" name probably makes him harder to get rid of. If it wasn't for that and 2 Superbowls, I doubt anyone would have much patience with him.

right....I'm huge giant fan...(since about '60! lol) Manning is a good man...you'd best have an a plus line as he has no mobility at all...and throws way too many interceptions...yup two superbowls with great D and Manning "not losing it" and the miraculous Tyree catch. Remember..Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, doug Willaims, Jeff Hostettler won superbowls.

If you want my opinion about BETTING this weekend, PUT money on TOTAL POINTS SCORED because patriots vs titans should be hig scoring game over 45 points, considering PATRIOTS ARE 2. or 3. total offense this year, and TITANS HAVE BEST O LINE IN PRO FOOTBALL and derrik henry is ballin :)

hmmmmm not bad, I like it.. often I overlook thinking about betting the over/under
I mean, not that it's bad to avoid looking for a reason to gamble lol, but ya if I had to bet that game, I like it better than taking the razor thin moneyline or spotting 14 points or whatever

And tomorrow JAGS STEELERS certanly low scoring game less then 42 TOTAL Points, last week Jags hardly got a first down, and about steelers offense i think that they are going to score mostly by FIELD GOALS :)

Ohhh psshhhhhh
He was really efficient, the 0 TDs is meh, he moved the chains.. sometimes you jam it in on the ground.. they had that fumble, then another almost-fumble from Blount that set them back and killed the drive, then that muffed punt.. shoulda had more points, nothing he can do if the game flows a certain way (except WIN of course!)
#gottabelieve #folesisking
