It has been a hectic day today in Europa Champions League. Seven games were played, with the Rangers Napoli game postponed. It started out great for me as I am a Sporting Club fan and they beat Tottenham in what must have been an unexpected result. We had a surprise whipping of Porto by Club Brugge 0-4, I bet that one just had to be a blooper for all betting fans. Another surprise, even though this one was more within the limits of logic was Marseille losing in Marseille to Eintracht. French teams seem to play very badly in Europe. Bayern of course beat Barcelona, Leverkusen beat Atletico de Madrid.
But the game I was interested in was Liverpool-Ajax as I am also a big Liverpool fan and I just knew Liverpool had to win or expose themselves to a dangerous position. And the game showed how important it was. Liverpool came out, as always with more possession but again a very fickle defense and no luck in front. Except on the seventeenth minute that luck showed up and Salah scored the opener. The happiness lasted 10 minutes, moment when Kudus scored a great goal, I mean he hung the ball right in the corner, Allison just looked at that ball.
After this Liverpool again fell into its erratic football which has been showing up lately and really had no answer for that equalizer. The first half finished with Ajax playing better than Liverpool but nothing much happened in either goal. The second half was different in the aspect that Ajax completely tried for the counterattack and they did have a few chances but you can't give Liverpool that much space, in fact if it wasn't because of how wasteful the team is at the moment Liverpool could have scored a few goals.
But the goal did come, nearly at the end a corner shot was headed by Matip and an Ajax defender headed the shot out, but as there is technology for this the referee gave the goal. In later reprises it can be seen that the ball clearly goes way past the goal line. A great win for Liverpool, not because of how it was played but because of the moment at which it comes.
