A Professional Athlete Has Done Something Shocking... and the Media Appears to be Trying to Cover it Up!

in sports •  8 years ago

On Monday, a professional baseball player did one of the most shocking things I have ever heard of and very few people are talking about it.

Russel Westbrook's fashion choices are always HUGE news.

Even though it should have been huge news, a blurb has not appeared on the crawl of the bottom of my TV screen as I watch ESPN. This information is not plastered all over social media or the internet. It is not the lead sports story of any local news broadcasts (outside of the city in which the culprit plays). It is not blowing up all over the 473 sports talk radio stations in the country.

I am appalled!

Whenever an athlete commits a violent act, gets caught cheating, fails a drug test, gets in a "beef" with a fellow player, commits a technical foul, is accused of a crime (even if later completely exhonerated), asks for a trade, denies asking for a trade, goes on a boat with his teammates, has a crazy dad trying to sell a shoe for $495, wears a funny suit, or goes on a date with a Kardashian it is nearly impossible to avoid this news... even if you aren't a sports fan.

Stop the presses! A Kardashian and an athlete are on a date!

Yet, this player's jaw dropping action has barely made a ripple in the sporting world.

The player in question is Anthony Rizzo, the All-Star first baseman for the Chicago Cubs ( the team I had despised for 44 years).

What unbelievable act did he commit?

Anthony Rizzo donated 3.5 MILLION DOLLARS to Lurie Children's Hospital.

Ho Hum... just some guy changing people's lives.

Lurie Children's Hospital is the largest pediatric hospital in Chicago. Not only do they treat medical conditions, they are also searching for cures.

What will The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation's donation be used for?

"The money will go toward setting up a pair of endowment funds, with one going toward providing grants to families struggling with expenses related to their children’s cancer care, and one paying for a pair of oncology specialists whose job it will be to help work with kids as they make their way through the process of fighting the disease." (NBC Chicago)

Yeah so he is only helping families who have kids fighting cancer. That is clearly nowhere near as important as finding out whether or not the 2008 Boston Celtics will invite Ray Allen to a reunion.

Which multi-millionaire should call the other multi-millionaire in order to end the "beef"? Ooooh now that is news!

Do you know what Rizzo was doing in 2008? He was fighting Hodgkin's lymphoma... and winning. At the same time, Rizzo's grandmother was battling breast cancer. Unfortunately, she did not pervail.

Rizzo has not forgotten his battle or his grandmother's...

"In every big moment in my life — like when I got called up to the big leagues — I always think about my grandparents. Every big game I play in, during the national anthem, I always say a little prayer and speak to them, and it’s hard not to choke up and think about how proud they’d be to see what I’m doing now because they know how much I love this game."(Chicago Suntimes)

Rizzo's $3.5 million dollar donation is going to change the world for many families engaged in their own battle with cancer. It's too bad that Rizzo didn't wear a funny suit and have someone named Kyle, Khloe, or Kendall on his arm... then maybe someone would have noticed.

Perhaps millions of people will never know what Rizzo did... but this kid will.

He did a good thing. He's a good man. That's a reward in and of itself.

upvoted for some positive content
@shayne

Very true. I doubt he did it for the press. But it would nice to hear some good news for once. People look up to athletes (for good or bad). It would be nice to hear about something other than failures in their personal lives.

Indeed he did, good look for the sports figures!

hey @hanshotfirst That is a very greatful guy!

full steem ahead!

I know. I love to hear stories of people who show their gratitude for life by giving back!

What a great story, thanks a bunch for elevating it so powerfully too!

All for one and one for all! Namaste :)

I am so glad you saw this! You are Mr. Positivity around here. I figured it would resonate with you and your incredibly positive attitude.

Wow, your words are filled with kindness and it touches me to start my day with such generosity. Thanks you! It did resonate with me. Namaste :)

Amazing generosity, have resteemed this post very good work I never read you b4.

Thanks for reading and resteeming! I'm very happy to write about such positive things!

The world we live in? Or the world we created. These ppl are ignored due to ratings, who provides those ratings? WE do. It really isn't the networks fault as a company beholden to investors, but rather us, for rewarding them with view time for these asinine, trivial stories as opposed to ppl like Rizzo.

I am not a baseball fan, I am a fan of humanity tho, which is why my hats off to him and you kind person got an upvote from me for allowing me to read your shared thoughts.

Have a GREAT WKND!!!

Very true consumers are the ones who tune in to see the train wrecks. I hope steemit can become a place where we can share some positivity!

Thanks for stopping by. You have a great weekend too!

Omg! I can't believe how such a thing is not noticed in media... That's grat thing.
Upvoted & Followed!

It really is awesome to hear! Thanks!

Excellent post! I like your work My friend

Thanks!

This is awesome. I wish more stories like this made bigger news but that would go against what media likes to put out there. Drama, controversies and pointless nonsense sells and people continue to gravitate to it sadly.

Yeah it is unfortunate. Maybe steemit can become known as a place where you can actually read about some good news.

Thank you for this heartwarming post. A light in a sometimes dismal world.

Just have to look for the good sometimes. Its there!

Thanks!

Media don't care about good acts anymore. It is not "cool" or intriguing to the majority of people and it results in fewer views and less profit. I find this phenomenon fascinating in a way. But I just guess that anger and hate are stronger emotions than goodness.
The man is a legend, tho! I don't know much about baseball, but there is one player I like now!

Yeah I have become so annoyed with the monetary aspect of sports (although I think players earn every penny... people are tuning in to see them) that it has become hard to really root for teams like I used to. I have actually started to look into players to see what kind of charity work they do. I am now trying to root for "good guys" even over teams. Didn't have to look too hard to find out Rizzo was doing some really great things. Thanks for stopping by!

I totally understand you. I find myself rooting for underdogs most of the time now as those teams/guys earn way less and truly show passion for sports instead of playing solely for money. At least I see it this way nowadays.

It's a lot more fun to root for the underdog!

What a beautiful man he is and thank you to give him this kind of respect ! ❤️

My pleasure. It was fun to write about something so positive!

Oh! I love this man. True heroes are tough to find. This is an awesome story!

It really is a great story. Its a great way to role model!

MAN WHAT A HERO! I am from San Diego and remember just a few years ago I was rooting for RIZZO as a SAN DIEGO PADRE haha. I wish we coulda kept him but he made history with the CUBS and is doing great things no matter the CITY!

Andrew Cashner was a pretty highly touted young pitcher at the time of the deal. It seemed like a win for both sides but Cashner kind of fizzled. The Cubs management really knows what they are doing.

THEO!

I know. I'm a Sox fan and nearly cried when the Cubs hired him. I knew it was only a matter of time before they would be multi-year contenders. But he's the best. Nothing I can say except.: I'm jealous.

Wonderful post! Simply AWESOME!!! No, I haven't heard anything about it on the or from the LAME STREAM, FAKE media...... SHAME on them! Thanks for the great post!

My pleasure. I hope to see more info like this popping up on this platform!

Thank you for bringing this to the Steemit spotlight. In this world if superficiality and gossip fueled media hogging the news outlets. Mr Anthony has shown in that not all millionaire celebrities are materialist and that there are good in humanity after all.

Upvoted, resteemed and followed!

Thanks! It was so refreshing to be able to report on something so positive!

Do Good for your soul/self.
Great post

Reading about this the other day definitely put me in a good mood. It is nice to see people using their fame and talent to help others.

Thank you for the earnest reminder of this mans great deed, and of what is most important.

Thank you! It was my pleasure. It was fun to write about something so positive.

This a touching post @hanshotfirst.....apparently the media prefer violent over good deeds.

This is true. Hopefully we can fill this platform with positivity. I'd rather read about that.

In full support too!!!

Wow that is huge! Publicity for these kinds of charitable acts is sometimes touchy, but at least someone should acknowledge it. Thanks for bringing it to our attention Mr. Solo

Thank you! I am a life long cub hating white sox fan but the damn team was just too likable. During the World Series I did a primer where I highlighted their charity work. So many of them did good things that I just had to root for them. It felt strange and my brothers still think I'm a sellout but some things transcend sports. Thanks for your thoughtful comment!

Thats cool but did you know pk subban donates 10 millions to the children hospital ;)

ps: its a black hockey player

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/pk-subban-childrens-hospital-donation-1.3659413

That's awesome!!! I wish it got more publicity.

youre right every athlete who donate to hospital or help should get all the media attention but we living in a world that love gossip and negative stuff

Sad but true. But we can do our part to spread positivy!

dont worry he got the publicity

the organization got jealous and trade him. Now he is doing wonder on his new team

go Pk subban go nashville for the cup

I am very touched to hear your story, you really enjoy this sport, I also really like sports especially soccer @hanshotfirst

I bet there are many soccer stars who also do good things.

Yes my friend also so and this is a photo of the football team I train in aceh @hanshotfirst

Cool!

Do you like my lead soccer team in aceh, and is there any suggestion for me @hanshotfirst

Is he on trial?

Nope. If he were, you would have heard about it about 3.5 million times by now. But alas... he only donated a huge chunk of money to a children's hospital. Boring!!!!

Nature of today's world. The worse acts, and people are propped up while the good hearted people like this gentleman don't see the light of day. Prime example the "Cash me outsiiiiii" girl. She gets more publicity for being a complete rebellious moron, as opposed to any other intelligent kid her age.

I'm happy we have a platform here where we can highlight some good things!

Nice! I love to hear story like this. Sadly when people do good things they don't get the attention they should only sometimes. Thanks for the share.

We can use steemit to change that! We can report on all sorts of positively things!

yeah I definitely love the idea.

Thanks for sharing the info, need more stories like this.

I agree 100%!

Great things comes to those who share and help

I agree!

Of course it wasn't publicized. It wasn't violent and didn't involve race, religion, or politics. Therefore, it's not "news."

That said, Anthony Rizzo is awesome and he has done a wonderful thing. I'm sure a guy like him is not out for praise anyway, but it would be nice to let the public know that there are still wonderful, decent human beings out there.

I agree! Luckily we have an opportunity to highlight positivity here on steemit!

Excellent post! We need more encouraging news like this. Thank you!

Thanks! I agree. There are a lot of great things happening... just not all of them get the attention they deserve.

More power to dudes like this one!

I agree 100%! It would nice to be a cub fan right now. A good guy to look up to.

Awesome person.

Everything I have ever seen about him seems to indicate that. I hope he keeps working to make a positive impact and many others continue to do the same!

Amazing! It's a good thing you're shining a spotlight on this news. It's sad that this kind of news is not considered worthy, because negativity and shocking news sell better. We need more of this positive news about actual good people if we want this world to become a better place!

Luckily we have an opportunity with this platform to highlight some positivity!!!

(Baseball) Hats off to Anthony Rizzo! Even though you might say he's a professional baseball player, whats $3.5 Million to him, let me tell you that is a huge chunk of cash! This story brightened my day!

Nice play on words! Indeed. $3.5 million will do a lot of good.

How dare he donate all that money to help a worth while charity, all those people he has helped, a selfless act... who does that

Clearly not any greedy, spoiled athletes!

There are so many of them, all could make a massive difference

Exactly! And many of them do. They just do it quietly.

Yeah, they should all be told they have to give a % as they earn to much

Great Information, a non self- centred Sports Star. What a fine example. Being Good and Kind does not make the News. Great Post, Thank you. Resteemed

Thanks! I agree. Simply way too much negativity being spewed out there. That is yet another beautiful thing about this platform, the community will get to decide what information we deem newsworthy.

I saw an article about this yesterday n Yahoo news... but you're absolutely correct you would think that sports media would blow this up and do a positive spin. Just give him the espy award now.

Lol. Yes the espy!!! I'm happy to hear that the story made yahoo. Need something happy on there!

Hey your article is really good, but i'd like a better headline, with no clickbait please.

I actually went back and forth on this. It's not my normal m o... but thought it fit nicely with the satirical nature of the piece. I was hoping the title would help make the point about negativity. I do appreciate and understand your point.

Anthony Rizzo hits a 3.5 million dollar HOME RUN!!!

Nice! That would have been a great headline for a story on the news!

What a good principled sweet man!

He certainly seems to be!

Wish there were more athletes like him. Maybe there is but we just don't hear it from msm.

I agree. I think there are a lot of cool things happening with athletes but they don't draw viewers like the negativity.

A class act who doesn't look to draw attention to himself, a very worthwhile cause!

He really seems to be very classy. I am a sox fan and I just can't help myself from liking him.

Big man, big heart with big love. Good jod. Sharing the happiness together

I agree. It was cool to write about something so positive. Thanks for checking it out.

That is awesome and should be news. Thanks for posting this.

My pleasure! It was nice to read something so positive!

This would be a great story to add to @anomadsoul's post idea call Faith In Humanity

He just started it and it's in its 3rd week. Check out his post and feed for more info.

I will right now. thank you!!!

Good work

Rizzo? He sure did do some good work!

Indeed! Not an easy task to pour out money from your wallet especially for helping!!!

has a crazy dad = has a crazy day?
i will erase this part of my comment when you get the correction if it's needed.

Good article. Me too i want to be in the trading one day.

Again, every single number in this story, is numerologically associated with the globalists satanists. Every Single Number. When you start to look, it's easy to see the signs everywhere. Synchronicity is not a coincidence.

Thank you for the post.

Maybe you should just stick to watching the sports and not the talking heads on sports shows. The problem isn't the news, it's people who listen to the news who give them ratings, even thou they are retards. Fuck the news

Props to Rizzo.

Great post!
I will follow you!
Steem on!
