2016 Olympics: What Rio doesn’t want the world to see (2016)

in sports •  9 years ago

The 2016 Olympics are set to begin in just over a month in Rio de Janeiro. As the city prepares to receive an influx of international visitors, it is building new infrastructure and transportation systems to accommodate the surge. But the city is also undergoing another major project: hiding and removing poor people from view of foreign onlookers. I went to Rio to see how the city is transforming to make way for the Olympics

This is an INCREDIBLY powerful, eye-opening video, @jay-kopinski! We catch news of other issues that have been arising from the wake of this rapid expansion and growth (which, in their own right are not in any way slight issues); but, this really brings to light a major truth - a larger truth that I'm ashamed to admit had been ultimately veiled to my eyes until now - in more the manner of a call toward the truth, than a whisper.

Rio de Janeiro’s polluted waters might put athletes’ health at risk.

That too is how I felt after watching this short from Vox, and why I originally shared it; glad you got the chance to see it.

First thank you for bringing the reality of my country for all to see, however this is not even 1% of the mud in which we live, worse than the indifference of the rulers is the media that is always deceiving the people the class struggle and the plan power criminal that the government set up, here they buy each other and those who sell do not suffer from a "reputation for murder" and are soon taken from public life or death, the homicide number in 2014 was 57,396, while traffickers and thieves have even .50 our police can not give more than two shots because it can account for excess violence worse than that they want to demilitarize our police, the same rulers who go abroad say they are suffering a coup, actually suffering the blow we are, in my town the government spends less than $ 0.1 with health, and pay taxes so absurd, usually pretty 50% of our salary goes to taxes, WE NOT HAVE STRUCTURE PRA HOST THE OLYMPICS when the Olympics have finished more likely it is that our situation worsens further

nice post @jay-kopinski good job

I think the same sort of thing happened at the Fifa World Cup 2014. It's pretty terrible how they try and hide the poverty to make everything look good

I hope in Rio will be the same situation like in my city Sochi ( winter olympic games ) / i mean everyone should be happy.....

Rio 2016 is going to be a disaster...

I always thought the Olympics were a big waste of money especially for poorer countries like Brazil. At the end of the day after the Olympics are done the problems will still exist and all of that money spent on a one time event will be gone. The problems in Brazil will only compound further.

The fencing arena.

Every time there any sort of Olympic Games, the host country ends up paying greater amounts of money than they had budgeted and there's nasty things such as expropriation. Not counting the Zika virus, in Brazil's case.

I'd rather see permanent Olympic installations somewhere than having a rotation amongst countries and ruining them one after the other.

Kind of like what Hitler did with Germany in 1938.

This is sad, and these Olympics have been eye opening. Thanks for sharing this.

Nothing unusual here - all countries want to show the 'best' and not the worse...hopefully after the olympics are finished, your country can benefit from whats left of the buildings, tracks etc

They have so much problems

I have a friend who's a top doctor here in the UK. She reckons its not safe to go!

Thanks for sharing this vidio

Brazil. Here, when it was a jungle .

Yes, it's really sad..

This is the true world and but it seems that we want to be in a bubble and ignore it.

I just found this too; however, my Portuguese isn't very good, can someone confirm this

Portuguese arriving! Yes, the olympic torch was stolen...

prometeus stolen the fire from the gods, and the people stole it from this ritual just for a momment, little by little we are AWAKENING,olimpic games world cup are just blinders for our Real situation, in Brazil,in the world and inside our own egobasedmentality. EUSOUfavelamasnaosouburro
