This is also known as the box to box midfielder. It was named after Carlos Volante ; It literally means “second steering wheel”. This type of player is normally present in a 2 man defensive midfield structure in which he is paired up with an anchor man.
A Segundo Volante is a perfect definition for “Jack of all trades” in tht he is mean to be at least moderately sufficient in all football abilities. They perform both defensive and attacking duties when called upon. They require no small amount of stamina in order for them to perform their duties effectively.
They are the players who help to press, get into the box late on to receive a cross, just like we see Thomas Soucek do for West Ham in that he is always getting into the box for a cross which has successfully yielded a couple of headed goals for him. A Segundo Volante is also meant to sufficiently link play from defense to attack.
In some teams, they are also expected to try shooting from outside the box like we see in Youri Tielemans of Leicester in which he is quite proficient in shooting from outside the box which has led to some outrageous goals from him, including his lone goal against Chelsea to give Leicester City the F.A Cup. The Segundo Volante is also expected to be a secondary playmaker with less creative duties than the advanced playmakers. Examples of Segundo Volante are: Youri Tielemans, Emre Can, Scott McTominay, Sandro Tonali, Paul Pogba among others
