Now the 2016 Olympic Games are started, I am wondering… Darts is not a sport, it is a game.
Why are there games at the Olympics that are no 'sports'?
It sure is a great achievement to get a dart in a small narrow area, hey! that is called Archery!
Sport is about competition and a physical challenge. Humans invented the Olympics to see what country is better and has the best, strongest people.
Mankind is made for precision
- we land on the moon or on a moving steroid and timed it within a second.
- we go inside the human body and operate a living heart.
- we shoot a ball exactly in the corner.
- we aim a dart within a couple milimeters.
For me sport is a physical game with competition of which you get exhausted.
This doesn't mean you need to be part of a competition, you can be the competition yourself. Challenge yourself to be better then the day before. For most people competition is winning of someone/some team. Competitions is just challenging yourself to be better.
Now some men get exhausted of walking down the stairs and some by even waiting for the subway. The key is that ‘physically active’ doesn't cover every aspect of sport. That is why some idiots who want to do good for everyone came with the follow definition:
Sport is the whole range of competitive and noncompetitive active pursuits that involve skill, strategy and/or chance in which human beings engage, at their own level, simply for enjoyment and training to raise their performance to levels of publicly acclaimed excellence.' (Standeven en De Knop, 1999)
I apologize for saying someone is an idiot, as they told me at school, no one has a good definition of sport. When you Google it, you will get hundreds of different definitions.
As mentioned, the definition of sport needs to cover every sport and not only cycling, football, baseball, basketball, athletics, swimming, etcetera. it also needs to cover air rifle shooting, curling and sailing.
The question I have now about the Olympic games:
- why is there boat racing but not car racing?
- why is there fighting? beating each other is not a sport!
- why are there high pregnant woman taking part at the Olympics?
- why is darts not a sport? it is also hitting a target like air rifle?
You know all the answers for these questions in my opinion. Do you agree?
Let sput this on the first place: It are all great human accomplishments and not all are sports. Sports isn't about accomplishment, it is competing with our body.
There is, of course, one rule I agree with: The sport needs to be international.
Hopefully the IOC will abandon some Olympic sports as part of the tournament. We do not call them sports we call them games. Darts is a game. So make dart a Olympic game or let only real sports compete at the Olympics games in Tokio twothousandsandtwenty.
So why is it called Olympic Games and not Olympic Sports then?
