McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers have been shot out of a cannon this season. They’ve managed to capture 15 of 18 points through nine games and are tied for first place in the NHL at press. They’ll have another opportunity to add to their points bank when they face the Western Conference’s last-place team, the Minnesota Wild, this Tuesday.
Leading the way for the Oilers early in the year has been the dynamic duo of team captain Connor McDavid (5 goals 12 assists and Leon Draisaitl (6 goals, 10 assists). Collectively, they’ve amassed a ridiculous 33 points in just nine games. Beyond McDavid and Draisaitl, Edmonton has received plenty of support from James Neal, who leads the NHL with nine goals on the season.
Minnesota will need to find a way to slow the Oilers’ dangerous offensive attack, which may be difficult for a team that’s dead last in the NHL in goals against per game (4.00). It’s been a combination of poor goaltending, as starter Devan Dubnyk owns a horrid 4.18 GAA and .874 save percentage, and lackluster play from their core veterans. NHL Odds: Wild and Oilers Do Battle in Minnesota
While it could be argued that the Edmonton Oilers have had a soft start to their schedule, playing just one club that qualified for the postseason last year in the early going, there’s no question that this is a different Oilers team from last year.
The biggest difference has been additional scoring depth and improved defensive play, which has led to them securing 15 of 18 potential points to open the season.
They’ll look to continue that solid play this Tuesday against the lowly Minnesota Wild, who have captured just four of a potential 16 available points.
