Throughout its history, the National Football League (NFL) and other rival American football leagues have used several different formats to determine their league champions, including a period of inter-league matchups determining a true world champion.
Following its founding in 1920, the NFL first determined champions through end-of-season standings, but switched to a playoff system in 1933. The rival American Football League (AFL) began play in 1960 and used a playoff system to determine its champion. In 1970 the AFL merged with the NFL.
From 1966–1969 prior to the merger in 1970, the NFL and the AFL agreed to hold an ultimate championship game, first called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game and later renamed the Super Bowl after 1968. Following the merger in 1970, the Super Bowl name continued as the game to determine the NFL champion.

Hey @paradise-found. Go Pack Go. :)
Great post. It is interesting to see how the current format developed and most of all who has won the championships. It shows you why the Pack have such a storied tradition with all those Titles. Its not called Titletown for nothing!
I'm from England but my passion for the Packers is quite intense. I have followed them since 93 (What a time to start) and I haven't looked back. The last time I was at Lambeau was 2002 against the Vikings on a very cold Sunday night. We won, of course! I would love to get back there one day.
I did have my name down on the season ticket waiting list but I have not heard anything in years. I have a very cool story about getting into the Don Hutson Center and meeting Mike Sherman among others but maybe that is for another time.
Anyway, great to see another Cheesehead on here.
Cheers, Gaz.

Living in Bucharest, Romania at the moment. My wife and I are teachers and I'm a soccer coach as well. We will probably be here for a few years yet.
I've got one eye on the international series at Wembley because, rumour has it, The Pack are coming to town very soon.

"The Pottsville Maroons were the most ferocious and most respected players I have ever faced. You know, I always believed the Maroons won the NFL championship in 1925 ... but were robbed of the honor." - Red Grange
Here in PA, we don't accept the Cardinals as 1925 NFL Champs. The Maroons were the best team that year, but were suspended at the end of the season due to playing an exhibition game against Notre Dame in Philadelphia. The Cardinals quickly scheduled two more games after the suspension to move ahead of the Maroons in the standings. Some of those teams used high school players, but the NFL okayed it anyway.
The Cards owner, Chris O'Brien, never attempted to claim the title, and at the end of the season the NFL simply didn't award the title to anyone due to the controversy. It was only in 1933, when the scumbag Bidwill family purchased the franchise, that the Cards laid claim to the 1925 title. Since Pottsville had disbanded by then, the NFL went along with it.
For the record, Pottsville beat Green Bay 31-0 that year. ;)

What a sad story. Do they ever get credit for it in modern times or is it something that is just swept under the carpet?
You've got to feel for the guys in that team, especially if they never got the chance again.
BTW that score must be a typo!! ;)

In the 1960's the NFL set up a committee to investigate the dispute, but they decided to side with the Cardinals. I'm sure the fact that the Maroons were long gone didn't help their cause. Funny thing is, the Maroons made their own 1925 championship trophy out of coal (Pottsville was a coal mining town) and gave it to the NFL Hall of Fame. It's on display there, I saw it.
The team was reinstated in 1926, so they did get another shot but finished in third. The owners soon ran out of money and after 1928 the franchise disbanded.
Sorry, no typo in the score. Green Bay managed to do ok after that beating. ;)

I'm glad they at least had another shot at it. That's cool that there is a coal trophy in the NFL Hall of Fame.

You know paradise, that's a good idea. I'll have to find time to throw one together for @brospn.
Few people know about the controversy. I live near Pottsville so the story gets kicked up every now and again around here.
