This. Very much this. I've seen it said that Purdue was too arrogant against FDU. I don't think anyone who's paid attention to Purdue this year could believe that. There were mistakes in strategy, I think. Purdue should have sent guys besides Edey into the lane more. But they've lived and died all season by the outside shot. If they'd had one of their better shooting nights, FDU would have been toast. But they didn't.
Give FDU credit for playing hard and fast and putting great pressure on the ball. But they didn't score an unusual amount of points against Purdue, and they didn't play a great half court defense - they took a huge chance on leaving shooters wide open. It was a gamble that paid off that night, but it wasn't what you could honestly call great defense.
And as with most teams, their only option with Edey was three players constantly putting their bodies on him. And he still got a double double.
This all came down to Purdues' guards shooting. And everybody knows those frosh, although talented, were struggling late in the season. Here's hoping that experience and more weight-training helps solve that problem.
