This is the newest UEFA football organization between National Teams which aims to replace friendlies with competitive matches that every team play against equally ranked teams. Nations League, especially important for teams that will not qualify to Euro 2020, because 4 extra teams will qualify Euro 2020 from this competition. This tournament has also promotion, relegation and finals.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
55 National Teams of European were split into four leagues based on their position in the UEFA National Team Coefficient Ranking. The top-ranked teams take place in League A and the lowest in League D. There are four sub groups for three or four in each legaue. For example: Crotia, England and Spain will play in Group A4, while Italy, Poland and Portugal will face each other in Group A3. Teams play each other home and away in September, October and November.
After group games, 4 group winners in League A will advance to Nations League Finals that will be played between June 2019. Group winners of League B,C and D will promote whereas teams who finish bottom of the groups in Leagues A,B and C will relegate before the next season that is 2020/21.
QUALIFYING FOR EURO 2020
Nations League can be accepted as second chance to qualify for Euro 2020. European Championship Qualifiers will be played as usual until play-off stage. There will 10 groups for 5 or 6. Group winners and runners-up will qualify to Championship. In last Qualifiers, there was play-off stage that third teams were played to determine last 4 ticket. With Nations League this play-off stage has been removed and this 4 ticket allocated to the new tournament. Well, how can teams qualify from there?
We mentioned about League A,B,C and D. Every league has one place to extra qualifying chance. There were 4 groups in each league. Winners of these groups compete in the play-offs. But if you placed as second team in your group, there may still a chance to get one of the lots. Let me explain that with an example. Lets consider the Group B2 (you can see in the picture above) consist of Russia, Sweden and Turkey. As assumption, Sweden finishes Group B2 at first place but they are already qualified to Euro 2020. Then Turkey, second team of group and didn't qualify by traditional qualifying system, advance to play-offs instead of Sweden between 4 teams came from 4 League B groups.
I think League D teams more happy than others, because their chance to get a lot is not easy from usual qualifying round. In Euro 2020, we will see a team from League D such as Azerbaijan or Georgia.
PRIZE MONEY
UEFA allocated 76.25 Million Euros for this new tournament. 1.5 Million Euros, 1 Million Euros, 750.000 Euros, 500.000 Euros to be given teams involving League A,B,C and D respectively as participation prize. In addition, League A,B,C and D group winners will gain 1.5M, 1M, 750K and 500K respectively. UEFA will give 4.5 Million Euros to Nations League Champion.
