The video assistance to arbitration (VAR) will apply in four scenarios: after a goal scored, a penalty situation, a direct red card or to correct an identity error of a sanctioned player . After being set up in rugby competitions, this is the first time that video refereeing has been used at the World Cup; French Ligue 1 will follow next year.
