Yoel Romero leaves UFC despite existing contract

It is extremely rare that a fighter gets cut from the UFC roster when they still have fights remaining in their contract: This is because the UFC still has to pay them for these fights even if they never happen. Therefore, I am thinking that something shady has gone down between Romero and probably Dana White because the aging legend that is Yoel Romero still has plenty of "gas left in the tank."

Personally, I have always been on the fence about whether or not I like Romero. I do admire his impeccable physique at 43 years of age and his dedication to fitness is certainly admirable because he can definitely go toe-to-toe with fighters that are 10 or even 20 years younger than he is. However, whenever he is victorious or even when he isn't but still gets given some microphone time the "Soldier of God" uses this time to preach and it almost seems like a sermon since he talks almost exclusively about religion even though the question he was asked had nothing to do with that. I think there are a lot of people out there that utilize any opportunity to interject their faith into conversation but I have found his consistency in this department to be annoying.

He is a great fighter though and many consider him to be one of the best that never won a championship of all time

While the fight was a bit boring since Romero seemed reluctant to engage, he went a full 5 rounds at UFC 248 with current champion Israel Adesanya, who many consider to be perhaps the best pound for pound fighter in all of UFC at the moment. In a post fight interview Romero would accuse Adesanya of "running away" the entire fight when the fact was that neither fighter was trying to engage and the stats show that other than his 0 for 3 takedown attempts, it was actually Israel that threw more strikes... nearly 50% more than Romero did.

In a post fight interview Dana White said that Romero "looked terrible in that fight" and when the boss says that about your performance and YOU just went on a post fight tirade saying bad things about your opponent and even about the UFC and your boss has the opposite opinion - you can bet that there is going to be some problems in the future.

It probably doesn't help a great deal that the last time Romero won any sort of major fight was all the way back in 2018 where he defeated Luke Rockhold by KO in the 3rd round.

To be honest, I don't even know why they gave the fight in March for the best to Romero to begin with since at the time there were 2 guys ranked above him that had defeated Romero in his last 2 fights.

So at the moment I don't really know why they decided to part ways and other promotions such as Bellator will probably want to snatch him up because that is where all aging UFC fighters go to live our their fighting days after they got into a huff with Dana White.

I've always found him very boring. I can't really imagine Bellator being terribly excited about picking up an aging, boring, preachy fighter.
