When I moved to Sweden for 4 years ago from the Netherlands I had to get used to a lot of new stuff. I had to learn the language, get used to all the Swedish traditions but also words used in a different way.
I remember a Swedish friend asking if I wanted to follow to a game of hockey. Hockey is really popular in the Netherlands so off course I said yes. Once we got there I suddenly realised he asked me to a game of ice hockey and that I did not even know the rules of that game. Hockey like I knew is very unknown in Sweden.
But why did he say hockey when he meant ice hockey?
The first origin of hockey is from 4000 years ago in Egypt. Already then they made carvings of a game with a stick and a projectile. Trough the ages even in Ireland, Greece and Mongolia they found proof of similar games. During the 19th century the different forms of all the hockey-like games began to become individual sports. They got their own rules and competitions. The 2 most famous forms as we know them now are fieldhockey and icehockey.
Fieldhockey is the form wich is most popular in the Netherlands so thats why we call it hockey. Ice hockey is the most popular form in Sweden so thats why they call that hockey and the other one landhockey.
Often one variation of the sport, such as field hockey or ice hockey, will predominate in a certain area and be known simply as "hockey".
I guess thats another mystery solved! Always check wich form is popular in the country where somebody use the word hockey to know what they are talking about. At least I know for sure that I only want to visit a game of "Hockey" in the Netherlands!

Haha it's not easy with culture difference sometimes :D
I have actually played Fieldhockey (as we say in Sweden in order to not confuse people) at college.
It's a really cool game but you get killer soreness in your back when you are newbie
