theLEAGUEFEED intro picture.jpg Some Real Revenue #'$ from a Social Sports League Business

Located in the DC Area

9th largest Television Market in the US
Fall season's registration fees alone for this businesses 2 locations:
(Note-generally there are 3-4 seasons depending on the sport; this is just one social sports organization in the area, there are dozens)

  • Basketball- $5280 (district)
  • Bocce- $8400 (district), $5400 (VA)
  • Dodgeball- $6435 (district)
  • Shuffleboard- $1125 (district)
  • Pong- $720 (district)
  • Soccer- $49400 (district), $24000 (VA)
  • Volleyball- $15600 (district), $7480 (VA)
  • Cornhole- $1000 (district), $4000 (VA)
  • Flag Football- $8320 (district)
  • Kickball- $102960 (district)
  • Skeeball- $4320 (district), $7200 (VA)
  • Softball- $15840 (district), $12960 (VA)
TOTAL: $280440 (one Social Sports Business in the metro among many, for one season)
Fall tends to be one of the bigger seasons,
so rounding this back to $250000 and multiplying by 4 seasons= $1 Cool Million
    This is registration alone!

Costs

  • A field or Gym for some of these sports (higher registration costs reflect this)
  • Equipment
  • Uniforms (most leagues provide a team t-shirt as a uniform when registering)
  • Insurance
  • Referees (offered reduced or free registration fees to players for officiating)
  • Software, Payment Portal, Website
  • Office and Support Personnel
  • Business License/Legal
I can't give you costs, because they will vary, however even at an abysmal 50% OR, you clear $500000/yr

A couple of things to keep in mind:

  • Starting up a business requires the upfront costs for new equipment, lower response for players, less negotiating power for fields and gyms
  • Some sports are more expensive to offer-- choosing the least complicated, least equipment cost with the most social interaction is always the best way to begin
  • Gauging interest with tournaments is a great way to start. One and done gives you the opportunity show potential advertisers and players what could be, without losing your shirt on a long term commitment of 7-8 weeks.

There are roughly 5000 players registered for the above Fall Season.

What does that mean?

  • Using the same 'Guestimate Formula' I used above, Let's take 4000 x 4 seasons= 16000 participants a year (which strangely enough comes in around $65/ea for registration, the average for most leagues!)
  • Additional revenue in the form of special events (zombie runs, bar crawls, concerts, etc) and merchandise
  • Drilling this down further, the demographic which participates in these games on a weekly basis is highly niche'd and sought after by advertisers...hint, hint

Top 60 Social Sports Organizations Brought in OVER $68 Million last year

  • This is in registration fees last year (does not include events, merchandise, sponsors
  • An Active Yearly Participant Base of more than 1.1 million (Chicago's largest league is over 70,000 competitors)

Good Investment- You make the decision.

The best part about these Adult Social Sports Organizations is they are not very difficult to start up. Aside from all of the pitches for franchises, you can go it alone and be successful. We love writing about them and can give you some guidance. Go ahead and drop any questions in the comments, and if we don't know the answer, we'll try to find out more for you.
Just remember us when your leagues take off!
Send us your league standings and updates and we'll promote 'em! Leave your players know theLEAGUEFEED is the place for how-to's, tips to improve, recruiting and captaining, social sports etiquette, beer reviews and more. We do appreciate it!
Together, we'll grow these leagues that so many players enjoy and in the process build businesses which support us and the ones we love. The Leagues are Businesses we can have fun doing, businesses which support our local communities, businesses we can be proud of...
