Edson Borboza -VS- Kevin Lee post fight review

in sports •  7 years ago

Last nights five round main event was quite enjoyable for the hardcore fans, but seemed less enjoyable for the casuals as boos rang out in the stadium during Kevin Lees grinding ground onslaught.

As many of you know Edson Borboza is one of the most feared strikers in all of Mixed Martial Arts, so Lee's game-plan was the correct one, as much as the fans disliked it. Lee did show he could stand and hang with Edson for a little while, but most of the damage he inflicted was from the ground as he landed huge elbows and strikes over and over again, completely smothering Borboza right from the get go.

As you can see from the stats Lee dominated the fight on the ground for most of the fight, and even won a few striking exchanges on the feet, although he faced adversity in the third round when Borboza landed a huge head kick severely rocking Lee and sending him into a chicken dance, although Lee's true skill showed as he managed to secure the double leg and take Edson down, giving him time to recover, compose himself and get back to work.

Lee continued to grind all the way to the fifth round and eventually the the doctor stepped in and stopped the fight due to the severe damage Edson received, referee Keith Peterson awarded Lee the TKO victory.

I actually really enjoyed the fight and thought Lee showed some excellent skills, he's going to be a future contender for sure, but I'm not sure he's ready for the big three just yet, he's only 25 and has all the time in the world, I think if he has maybe one or two more fights he will be a lot more prepared for the elite of the elite.

Here is the rest of the cards results last night, it was a fun card and delivered for sure.

Not a bad card at all. Lee is really impressive but his ability to make weight at 155 seems to be an ongoing issue. A fight with Porier next would make sense, and it would be a good number one contender fight if neither Conor or Ferguson can get back in the octagon this year.

Agreed, probably even fight better at welterweight, he'd fit perfect in the rumoured 165 division. If he has trouble next time he deffo has to move, it'snot worth his health. Frankie looked pretty good too, although I don't think he beats Holloway, or Ortega again.

Hahah it could have gone either way man, that chicken dance was glorious.

I enjoyed the main event too, even though I had money on a Barboza knockout. Really impressed by Lee's wrestling, you wouldn't know it from his last 2 fights but Barboza is actually great at avoiding being taken down.

Thought I was on a winner in the 3rd when he got that spinning heel kick but again Lee's wrestling instincts kicked in and he managed to hold him down until he'd recovered.

Impressed by Lee but you are right, think it is a bit too early to put him in against Khabib just yet. I hope for Barboza's sake they don't give him another wrestler for his next fight.

Pleased Frankie made it through without taking anything seriously hard to the head, but I wasn't overly impressed with that fight.

Willis Vs Sherman was a cool fight and I was shocked by David Branch.

Yeah man he's just not ready yet, but he has great natural instincts and a pretty decent fight IQ, I think he may only truly flurrish at 170 tho. That head kick was so close,I think Borboza would have won it if he didn't jump on top of him and give him time to recover.

Frankie looked good, so did Cub, but I think he just another level higher than Cub.

I was delighted for Branch, he's really underrated and looked pretty good after such a long lay-off.
