Today I'm going to take a look at arguably the weirdest man in MMA, we'll look at his stats, some fight footage and talk about where I see Tony heading in the not so distant future.
Once you get over the insufferable cringe he begins to grow on you, he may lack the trash talk, and even basic communication skills, but god damn, he's in the elite of the elite when it comes to actually fighting, and that's all that really matters.
Tony "El Cucuy" Ferguson
25-3-0 (W-L-D)
Firstly lets take a look at his fight record and look at his journey from The Ultimate Fighter to now, you can see he has an excellent record in the UFC, only suffering one loss to Michael Jonhson all the way back in May 2012 at UFC on Fox 3.
As you can see it's quite the impressive record and it's only set to grow greater as he reaches the peaks of the sport and every opponent is among the best on earth.
Here is some highlights of the loss to Michael Johnson I mentioned above, as you can see it is an absolute war with huge back and forth striking exchanges. It was a great fight and an excellent fight to have as your only loss in the UFC.
Tony was recently scheduled to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for the Lightweight Title at UFC 223 in Brooklyn New York, but ended up becoming one of the many victims during that insane fight week. He tripped on a cable doing PR and tore a ligament in his knee, and ultimately needed surgery and could not fight Khabib, for the FOURTH time.
It's a pretty gruesome injury, made all the stranger by the fact that it didn't happen during a fight or in training.
Tony is expected to be out for the next couple of months anyway, and even at that, he will still have to complete a full fight camp once he is healthy, so it might not be until the end of the year until we see him fight again, or even early next year.
The next question is who is he going to fight, does he fight Khabib for the title, who might end up defending against Dustin Poirier first, or does he come back and take a warm up fight to make sure he is 100% going in against Khabib? Knowing Tony he will want to jump in against whoever has the title straight away, no warming up, no shaking off the cobwebs, straight back to the mission at hand.
There's also the huge curve ball that is Conor Mcgregor, if he comes back before the end of the year, pending his court case, it could put Tony on the sidelines for a Title shot. The way the timeline is working out, it looks like Conor and Tony could be coming back to action around the same time, and we all know who would get the Title shot first there.
So that leaves Tony in limbo, a for sure number 1 contender, technical interim Lightweight Champion and rightful heir to the throne, but unfortunately not a fraction as profitable as McGregor, and that's all that matters to the UFC these days, why else would they be doing this in the first place, but to make as much money as possible.
I personally have craved the Tony Khabib fight for a long long time and believe it must be done at some point, but I also don't want to see Tony sit on the sidelines for over a year as he waits for McGregor and Khabib to inevitably fight, so maybe his best option is to come back and fight an Alvarez or a Poirier first, he is absolutely certain to fight for a title next if he becomes victorious in either of those bouts. At the end of the day only Tony can make that decision, and only time will will tell, I look forward to the future of the lightweight division, it's going to be mayhem for the next 2 years at least.

"he may lack the trash talk, and even basic communication skills, but god damn, he's in the elite of the elite when it comes to actually fighting". - That's what Bruce Buffer should say when introducing him before a fight!
Yeah it's a shame he got injured, I think he'd definitely have caused Khabib some big problems and even if he didn't win he'd have exposed some genuine holes and given others a few ideas how to beat him.
That scar looks crazy, unbelievable to think tripping over a cable could lead to him needing that kind of surgery when he was kicking metal poles for fun before his fight with Lee.
I think you are right when you say he should come back and fight someone like Alvarez or Poirier. or maybe even Nate Diaz, that would be a cool fight!

Haha thanks man, one of my finer quotes I must say. Holy shit I actually never thought about Nate man, that would be a sick match up stylistically aswell, come to think of it, I'd actually prefer to see that fight over any other opponent for Tony apart from Khabib. Tonys knee injury is mental, like nothing to do with fighting, how many people do you know that have tripped and needed surgery like that? absolutely crazy.

I've seen guys attacked by sharks not need surgery like that.
Don't blame you for forgetting about Nate, I did too until I saw him on a youtube clip recently. He could definitely do with a big fight like that to put himself back into the public eye. Even if he lost to Tony the 3rd Conor fight would still be there for him so he's nothing to lose.

100% man, It's already been way to long since his last fight, he's lost loads of momentum in the public eye.

Tony is the Man! He’s insane, so driven and obsessed with the sport.
So, I think that Tony deserves a title fight when he recovers and comes back, I think let khabib fight conor, porier, Lee or Alvarez, and keep the division going, but then Tony gets the title fight when he gets better.
He technically is the interim champ, it’s silly how he got stripped for getting injured. I think Tony can beat khabib, I want to see them fight so bad!

I think he has a definite chance to beat him too, I think Conor gets get the shot first tho unfortunately :( Mother of god we need to see Tony and Khabib.

Nate Diaz comes to mind but I don't want to see Nate vs. Any top 5 guy until he gets a win under his belt because he has been away for so long.
Off topic a little but I would like to see Nate vs. Laquinta. Al Laquinta deserves another big name for steeping in against Khabib and Nate needs to fight someone at the bottom or just outside of the top 10 due to his absence from the division. It' s a winnable fight for both fighters and springs the winner into another big fight.
As for Tony ... that's a hard question. I feel as he needs to face someone other then Khabib but who ..... Anthony Pettis could be possible. He is on a skid but is 1-1 in his last two and is a former champion.

I think that would be better for nate, to get rid of any ring rust, but I doubt he'd even consider anyone outside the top five at the moment, he sees himself way bigger than he actually is, yeah he is a huge star, but he wouldn't be half the name he is if it wasn't for McGregor.

Agreed, Nate doesn't want to face anyone but Conor. While Nate is a star he simply doesn't generate the big bucks and only way he gets paid anywhere near the money he wants is in a trilogy match vs. Conor. Problem is that Conor currently has tons of options in front of him and Nate has waited too long to get back in the cage.

Yeah and I doubt Conor wants to come back to a fight as tough as that for him. Nate only needs one or two big victorys to get into title contention, he needs to get back to work and the third Conor fight will come naturally.

I'd like to see Khabib and Dustin coach the next season of TUF before they fight at the end, that should give Tony time to rehab come back and get a tuneup fight to make sure he is 100%
It would also help the US audience get more used to Khabib since he has the record to get great popularity but people didn't take to him at first likely because he was a work in progress English wise

Yeah good idea actually, I'm not sure how it would work time wise tho, I'm pretty sure Khabib is going into Ramadan soon, so he will be fasting and praying for a good while, and I think they'll have organised the next season by then as the last one is already shot.
