Rio 2016: Olympic athletes told to ‘keep your mouth closed’ when in contaminated water

in sports •  8 years ago

These olympics are going down the drain. Literally. The amount of trash and contamination that is in these waters is horrible. Plus athletes are getting mugged, TV stations got their equipment stolen and much much more... Do you guys think that these Olympics should be boycotted? Will you watch them anyway?

I'm an Olympic junkie through and through and have been following the horrific things that Rio has done in preparation for the games and I have read about the water issues they've had. However, I won't be boycotting. What needs to be done instead is for the Olympic committee really needs to start picking places where millions of dollars aren't wasted and spent on building and "cleaning up the area" such as what has been done in several places where Olympic games have been held. SO many even recent Olympic arenas become abandoned in time! I get so upset about it! They should just have a rotation of the same places and keep them in use.
This is not the first time things like this happened in Olympic games and they have not changed at all. The 1988 Summer games had a clean up of homeless people and vagrants put into slave labor camps so that the streets in S. Korea looked better. They had similar things in the more recent Athens games. It needs to just stop. Rio was simply a bad choice considering how many problems that area has in general. It was just poorly chosen!

I am going to watch them as well for sure but I know that all of this is wrong. Hopefully it will help expose the problems that people are facing in Brazil but I am not counting on it. A good example were the Sochi games. Before the games and during the games there was a lot of media pomp but then it all died down and people tend to forget things quickly.

I think the whole thing of people being relocated, houses demolished or better ones being built for the twenty families who wouldn't leave their village, and the bus routes being rearranged to not pass the "not so pretty" neighborhoods makes me the most upset about the Rio games. The nasty viral bug in the water doesn't help at all though. That's pretty scary. Did you see what the water looked like before they started to build? So gross.
