Running report – it’s been a while

For those of you following me because I’m an ultra runner and look forward to my posts about running and training, sorry. I haven’t been posting much lately. But I have been running.

I’ve been working on a new strategy and trying out different stuff in preparation for my next ultramarthon – in January.

Two big things I’ve been working on are:

  • Hills – I’ve actually been doing some
  • Pace / heart rate – trying to run slower to run faster

Before my last ultra, in November I was a bit hampered by tendonitis in my Achilles and my ankles. It was a bit ‘touch-and-go’ as to whether I’d be able to do the race at all.

But my body held up ok and now everything seems to be fine, mostly.

So now I’m back hitting the trails and working hard to get my hill climbing legs back. I’m going to need them.

I’ve also been doing some work on setting a more reasonable pace. I was pushing hard in my training before the race, trying to best my 10km time and get faster. And whilst I did get quite a bit faster, I don’t think that helped me too much in the race.

So now I’m working on keeping my pace even at a sustainable level, which for me is about 6 minutes per km on the road, and 9:30 minutes per km on the trails. That’s been really useful in resetting my expectations of just how fast I can run an ultra.

And the answer is not very fast at all!

I’m also starting to put in some bigger runs, breaking out of the 10km distance that I used to train for the last race. And so far things seem to be working for me, including the weather.

Summer has come early to Wellington, and if it continues as it has started, then we are in for a cracking summer indeed. This will make getting out onto the trails so much easier. Not to mention pleasant.

The other thing I’ve been playing with is videos. I’m trying to video each long run and document some of the trails around Wellington. It’s a work in progress as I learn how to take video and figure out how to get a level horizon with no viewfinder. But it’s fun to do, and you never know, one day I might even get good at it.

So there you have it. I might not be posting much about running, but I’m still in the game, working hard to prepare for some more madness.

So what have you been up to?

I hope to get out tomorrow. I need to work off the effects of some early Xmas parties. It's getting colder here now, but I won't let that stop me.
