The biggest problem that the NBA and NFL both share is that the talent pool is too scaled. At the very top you have a few super stars that dominate the game, and then you have the rest of the league that bounces around for a few years in one role or another and then bounces out of the league. It makes the games predictable over the long run and take the enjoyment out of watching for me.
