Usually, my intrest in cricket is restricted to "the ashes", or a random afternoon drinking session watching my local professional cricket team - Glamorgan County Cricket club. But after @buggedout, who has a far deeper intrest and understanding of the whole sport started and ran the ICC Mens cricket world cup sweepstake, ive now got skin in the game and am rooting hard for my new favourite team; Pakistan...

With 6 of thier 9 games already played and things not going to plan, can my adoptive team come good and win it for me, or will they fall at the first hurdle and fail to make the knockout stages??

Pakistan's journey in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is swathed in uncertainty as they grapple with recent losses against Afghanistan and South Africa, leaving their position in the tournament hanging in the balance as it enters its second phase. The echoes of their triumphant 1992 championship victory are fading as Pakistan faces an uphill battle to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the World Cup 2023. Their fate now hinges on the performance of other competing teams.

Guided by the capable leadership of Babar Azam, Pakistan embarked on their World Cup 2023 campaign with a promising start. They notched two consecutive victories, first defeating the Netherlands in Hyderabad and then achieving a remarkable run chase record against Sri Lanka at the same venue. However, their fortunes took a dramatic downturn following a crucial encounter against the host nation, India, on October 14. In a game marred by a lackluster batting performance, Pakistan found themselves dismissed for a mere 199 runs. India, with ease, secured a seven-wicket victory in just 31 overs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

This disheartening defeat at the hands of India was followed by successive setbacks against Australia and underdog Afghanistan. Pakistan's woes continued with a nail-biting loss to South Africa. As a result, their net run rate plummeted to -0.378 after enduring four consecutive losses in the ongoing 50-over World Cup. Despite these setbacks, Azam's side clings to hope, positioned just outside the top four with six points from five matches, and with three more group stage matches to go.

The road ahead for Pakistan is challenging. They are set to face Bangladesh next in the round-robin group stage, followed by matches against New Zealand and England. Meanwhile, India, New Zealand, and South Africa have dominated this campaign, and their path to the semi-finals seems assured, leaving the fourth spot, currently occupied by Australia, as the only one up for grabs. Even if Pakistan manages to win all three of their remaining matches, a spot in the knockout stage remains uncertain. In such a scenario, Pakistan's hopes hinge on Australia losing at least two of their remaining four group matches. If this scenario unfolds, the fate of the two sides will be determined by their respective net run rates.

However, the likelihood of Pakistan claiming the fourth position, or even third, appears remote, as it would require Australia to lose three of their last four matches. The coming matches will be a crucible of pressure and expectations as Pakistan strives to secure a place in the semi-finals of the World Cup 2023.
