Rafter On The Payette River, Idaho

Technically an "inflatable kayak" but as a REAL kayaker... that is a raft... LOL! They are also a LOT of fun!

This rapid was created the year we moved to Idaho. Mind you, we moved HERE for the whitewater, that little stretch of river was destined to be our playground for many, many years. We had a couple guidebooks, and then the river flooded. Massively. One slope slid into the little town of Banks and all but wiped it off the map, and the guidebooks were all now missing a brand new class IV rapid. The local professional guides took it upon themselves to name it, and their choice probably helped get the warning around the boating community. The new rapid was named "Go Left Or You're Fired."

In river rat parlance, "left" and "right" are as you face downstream. If you look at the right side of the river, you will note there is no clear channel through. Any guide who attempted to run the right would be unemployed, at least! Even running left does not guarantee a smooth run though...
