Cyclocross- a party with a bike race in the middlesteemCreated with Sketch.

As a fan and a participant, I absolutely love cyclocross. Unlike a road race, which often has a serious feel, a cyclocross event feels like a giant party that just happen to have a bike race in the middle of it. Mud, cold, barriers, crowds, cowbells, beer, and a bunch of exhausted athletes trying to make their way through the mess...what's not to like? I have posted some of my cyclocross racing photos before, but today for @juliank 's #sportsphotography Saturday contest I want to share a few that I think capture the feel of a cross event as much as the racing itself.

Great photos. It never gets cold or muddy enough here for cycclocross but every time I watch it on TV it looks crazy. Guys falling over on bikes that don't look made for mud. Looks like the spend more time carrying the bike than riding it sometimes.
I'm sure it's a laugh if you're doing it though.

Yeah, it's a lot of fun...and definitely a great way to improve your bike handling skills. After negotiating a steep muddy or technical descent on a rigid bike with drop bars and skinny tires, almost anything seems easy on a mountain bike with suspension. I like riding trails on both types of bikes, because one makes me appreciate the other.

As far as obstacles are concerned, you have to decide whether it's faster to ride or run. Usually riding is faster, so you see more and more people these days bunny hopping the barriers (and more course designers trying to prevent that). Sometimes though, you get a really steep hill like the one in the second to last picture that is generally faster to run up. It's always fun though when you can ride it and pass people who are pushing their bikes.

Love it! Thanks for sharing, bro!

Thanks! I'm always happy to share my cycling shots. More to come.

It must have been a great competition :) Thanks for the cool pictures.

Thanks! It is an amazing day of racing on a really great course.

The pictures telling the endurance story. Nice clicks.

Thank you.

Wonderful photos and sport! Cheers!

Thank you so much! It really is a great sport, and I like photographing it as much (or more) than racing.

I guess so! I'd love it better too ;)!

Love the last picture man, cyclecross is one hell of a sport

Thanks! I almost didn't include that last shot because it is out of focus, but there is something about it that I like too. I blame the camera shake on the the cold weather... but all the beer I was drinking may have been a factor too.

What, this was in Asheville?!?!?! When was this? I totally want to do this, looks like a blast!! Great photos!

Yeah, this was in Asheville. It was 2016 Cyclocross Nationals held on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate. That was a one time event, but there is an active cyclocross scene in, and around, Asheville. Check out https://www.facebook.com/AshevilleCyclocross and https://www.nccyclocross.com/ for more info.

Cool shots! wonderful event!

Thanks! Yeah, it was a great event.
