After receiving the refusal of the Portuguese José Mourinho, Lyon hired Rudi García as his new coach.

Lyon announced that Garcia signed a two-year contract to take the place of Brazilian Sylvinho, who was fired after only a couple of months in office.

The club occupies the 14th place in the standings of the French league of 20 teams, although it remains undefeated in its Champions League group - where Lyon is measured at Benfica next week.

Garcia spent the last three seasons with Marseille, and also directed another strong rival of Lyon, Saint-Etienne. The 55-year-old helmsman was previously in charge of Lille, where he had among his pupils a young Eden Hazard, a group with which he completed the double of the league and the cup in 2011.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said last week the team had submitted an offer to Mourinho.
