Two-time world champion Dennis Orcollo lost at the prestigious 2019 US Open 10-Ball Championships this weekend at the Rio All-Suit Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Orcollo's road to the championship match was impressive, but he was beaten by Marco Teutscher of the Netherlands, 9-11, in the titular duel of the tournament with the blessing of the World Pool-Billiard Association.
Orcollo advanced to the finals when Teutscher beat the semifinals of the winners ’bracket, 9-6, in a double-elimination format.
The rival collapsed in the losing column but recovered after defeating Filipino cue master Jeffrey de Luna (6-9), blocking an all-Filipino finale.
With Teutscher's return to the finals, he put up a tighter shot in the final moments of the match to break Orcollo's clean record and claim the first major win in his career.
Teutscher took home the US $10,000 prize while Orcollo did return home with a $ 6,500 runner-up purse. De Luna finished in third place to pocket $3,800.
Orcollo's losers included New Zealand's Jimmy Henry in the second round (9-4), Canada's John Morra in the third round (9-5), Chinese-Taipei's Yu Hsuan Cheng in the fourth round (9-3) and De Luna in the quarterfinals (9-8).
The Pinoy cue masters will next compete in the US Open 8-Ball Championships to be held at the same venue.
It seems like Orcollo is always short of winning the championship. Years ago I read a headline in the Sports section of a local newspaper, “PERA NA NAGING BATO PA”, he was leading in that billiard match but unexpectedly he lost to his foreign opponent.
