The golden boot winner of the 2019 AFCON winner Odion Ighalo finally annoucces his retirement today from international football.
The 30-year-old striker playing for the chinese club side Shanghai Shenhua scored 5 times to make the Super Eagles finish in third place in during the last just concluded AFCON held in Egypt, making him the top scorer with two goals ahead beating Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez and Cedric Bakambu.
It's been an amazing 5 years journey, but after the due consultation and extensive discussion with my family, I have decided it's time for me to retire from the national team,"
It could be recalled that he almost gave up on the Nigerian national team after criticized the fans over his aweful performance at the last world cup. Now he proved the critics wrong with his cool performance at this AFCON tornament.
Scoring a total of 16 goals for Nigeria in 35 appearances, and he also captained the country's Under-20 team to the 2009 World Cup, also held in Egypt.
While thanking the national team and fans he stated that,
"It's now time to concentrate on club football and give the younger players a chance to learn and grow."
We hope the Nigerian national team would be able to get a perfect replacement for this great striker.
I'm not a fan of Ighalo, but I believe it's good to leave when you still a bit relevant. It makes people remember you for good.
