Through the Eyes of a Sportstalk Investor

in sportstalk •  5 years ago

Big issues are coming out in this platform ever since #newsteem has launched. This trending hashtag was made in an effort to bring honest curation in Steemit which also brings hope for tribes in resolving the issue of honest curation within the entire community.

The long-time issue of comment voting, self-upvotes, shitpostings, and circle jerking has always been a problem of any tribe.. It's always a big hurdle because it is difficult to predict human behavior.

I was part of those users mentioned above, I used my stake for my own benefit. Voting myself, shitposting, and voting on comments were some of the violations I made. Admitting takes a lot of courage, so I commend myself a little for that.

A glimpse of hope shined in my eyes a couple of days ago when sportstalk introduced a feature that enables us to use downvotes 2.5 times a day and a handful of top investors are doing their tasks in policing abuse. I was one of the users being hit be a barrage of attacks and had conversation with @abh12345.sports regarding the behavior.

I believe, there is no "wrong" of maximizing your stake. Just that it makes "wrong" because people have standards to meet for a better platform. They are doing their task to police abuse. I see that they probably do it either to protect their stake or make this platform the best tribe in Steem (and probably the best Dapp?). I love the second.

In order to make Sportstalk a better platform, there are rules-regulations-standards being set. These are highly discouraged.

  • Self-upvoting on comments
  • Excessive posts and self-upvote
  • Posting low quality content (aka shitpost)
  • Circle-jerking (voting)
  • I would also include contests that "almost" have the same writing. The efforts made are of low quality, yet just to escape the effort of writing qualitatively.

My Realizations

Amazing page breaker thanks to @julstamban

Thanks to the better actors, some are even top investors in this platform, I have come to a realization to stop the things I'm doing above. Its a "short-term" strategy and instead, focus on a strategy that nurtures my audience, investment, and network.

Honest curation, content with effort (too shy to write with quality because clearly I'm not), engagement, and helping to police abuse. You can check on @sportsinfo's daily updates for a summary of most bad behaviors of some users.

So now, I pledge to use my stake in a way that aligns the mission and vision of the platform.

  • I will self-upvote in my posts given that I only post 1 or 2 times a day.
  • Never upvote my own comments.
  • Vote new users as a welcome gift for their entry.
  • Curate top quality posts related to sports (Top priority).
  • Vote on users who engage on my posts as a way to tip them.

My delegated Sports are coming in a few days. So today, I'm shutting off my alt accounts and focus a new, refreshed, and inspired @korver. Together, everything will be better.

Thanks a lot,

@korver

Hi @korver

Excellent self reflections.

Vote on users who engage on my posts as a way to tip them.

This is a good practice which even many established steemians don't practice. A response to a comment can be either an upvote or a reply or both. If none of that is forthcoming, I stay away from engaging with the post of that Steemian.

No upvotes and no comments from me but I may read their posts.

There are several big names on Steem (including SportsTalkSocial) who post regularly but never engage with their audience either by voting, replying or doing both.

Probably, these Steemians are of the view that the others are beneath them not worth responding to.

That's true @devann. I think incentivizing your audience encourages active engagement.

I have seen some authors here who neglect engaging/replying on users comments, which for me decreases their engagement factor.

Well, such good intentions deserve an upvote! I always stroll through the new section to search for new users with good content. It is sometimes discouraging, but there are always new, enthousiastic steemians to find. You just have to look for them long enough!

Thank you so much @pele23 for the support. It is true that sometimes discourage but there are some treasures out there. Keep grinding!

Great! I hope this encourages other users to change for the better.

Thank you @jefz! Yes, I hope others will chip in their efforts.

Well this sounds excellent @korver, I hope others will follow :)

Well, it was you who triggered this new venture.

Takes A LOT of courage to recognize when one does something wrong.

I hope the best in your new path. Its good to see this!

Thank you for the encouragement @neri0x. My hope is that others will follow.

@korver it doesn't matter what other people do. The important thing here is what YOU do. You made a change and see what happens? you have comments, you have support, you have votes, you have many new possibilities, maybe new followers and the feeling you are doing good and also, very important, you are not risking anything, you are playing the long game, you are investing on your future, I mean, when people do bad things or behave bad, they are shooting themselves in the foot and destroying their future.

All that matters is you.

I truly agree with this. Things are changing positively. Morally speaking, I feel very alive too.

And this is just the beginning. You have a new follower here, you have my support.

Sound excellent bro.

It is really great to see someone acknowledging his mistakes and is bent on correcting them. I wish for more like you on here @korver

Hoping others will follow. Also, I will continue to monitor the outgoing votes of the whales here.

Thanks for setting a good example. I would like to see this community grow. I'm just getting started here. Thanks.

Yeah, thanks! I'm pretty stoked tbh. The way it is supported by users here gets exciting!

good idea on trying to encourage new users

Truly. Hope this encourage them.

how do you find the new users specifically? do you use some new curation content finding tool?

I used to be using Curie's tool before, but since Sportstalk posts aren't than much than the whole Steem blockchain itself, I just scroll under #new button.

Good for you mate! I wish you every success :-)
