Last season all football supporters around the world were left in awe at what probably became the best Ajax performance in UEFA Champions league in more than a decade. The young team of an average age of 24 beat the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus to reach the semifinals of the biggest accolade in Europe. After which the team went ahead to lift the league trophy after more than 4 years.
The fruits of Johan Cruyff project which started in 2011 had started to show as the team was being compared with the the team of Edgar Davids, Patrick Kluivert and Clarence Seedorf that won the Champions League in the mid-90s. Cruyff had focussed on training exceptional individuals to come up with a team that could not be marched on all fronts, both locally in the league and across Europe.
The achievements of the Ajax team in the 2018/2019 season attracted the giant teams in Europe to most of these young players. The latest to leave the club is Matthijs de Ligt (19) who moved to Juventus at 67m pounds, that is after Frenkie de Jong (21) who had earlier moved to Barcelona at 65m pounds. At the moment Donny van de Beek (21) has been linked with a move away from the club too.
