A crash was inevitable today... sadly

in sportstalk •  5 years ago

The first stage in any Tour de France, when it’s not a time trial is always very tricky.
Today was no exception. And it was not hard to predict there would be a big crash. All teams are still complete and the rider that wins also takes the yellow jersey. That’s a recipe for disaster, sadly.

The main victim was the favourite for today, Dylan Groenewegen. Luckily for him his teammate Mike Teunissen won and took the yellow jersey.

But, if you ask me, a time trial to start is a better idea, it will the situation less nervous and safer for the riders!

Sincerely,

That was absoloutely crazy! What a pile up.

That stage was absolute carnage! Some of the 90 degree bends in the closing kilometres were a really hard watch and I was constantly just expecting a huge pile-up. Lets hope Groenewegen is okay as the bunch sprints just won't be the same if he has to abandon.

I'm also amazed Mike Teunissen managed to grab the win - all the Eurosport commentators thought it was Van Aert, I thought it looked like Tony Martin, and Teunissen was the last rider I expected to see pop up at the top of the results afterwards.

Hopefully the TTT today will be a little more quiet.

It’s always like that the first week. I think that if you would let them drive on a highway for the last 90 km, they would still manage to crash...

Today, they will get close to 60 km per hour on average, I think! The track is like formula 1 for cyclists, incredibly fast corners, flat and in the centre of Brussels, so no wind!
Will be very spectacular.

I've seen the replay, shit was crazy!

I was just reading about Stage1 and this came up...

Thomas crossed the finish line around two minutes behind the stage winner but because the crash happened inside the final 3km on a designated sprint stage, he was credited with the same time as the group he was riding with, so ended up losing no time on his rivals for the overall win.

Can't quite get my head around it, to be honest but I totally agree with you about having a time-trial to determine the wearer of the Yellow Jersey for S2.

A few years ago I went to see the Tour when it kicked off near my home in Yorkshire UK. Absolutely brilliant and been a fan ever since, especially with so many competitive Brits riding in the last few years.

We are spoilt for choice with all the sport on at the moment lol!!

It’s a circus, and in Belgium even more. We are born with a bike between our legs over here! 😎
