Ian Book decides to skip NFL draft, stay another year at Notre Dame

The starting quarter back for Nortre Dame's Fighting Irish made a somewhat cryptic Tweet indicating that he was not going to declare eligibility for the NFL draft and later confirmed this in a press conference.

Of course, he could later change his mind if the offers get to be good enough and to be honest I don't really know how long the window of opportunity is for this sort of thing. Book has one more year of eligibility with Notre Dame and perhaps could go on to a lucrative NFL career if he so chose.

I think that his decision to stay at Notre Dame could be a wise one because even though he gets a lot of attention for being the quarterback at ND, he isn't exactly a phenom. Despite the press he gets due in part to who he is playing for, he isn't even in the top 20 for QB's according to a coaches poll and I kind of agree with that.

Book is a running QB and is actually pretty limited in his capabilities as far as his passing game is concerned. This is all fine and dandy in the NCAA, especially when you have one of the best offensive lines in the country working with you, but this rarely transfers into something that can even be useful in the pros. In my opinion I would actually be kind of surprised if he can even make it in the NFL and therefore, if he is offered a relatively lucrative draft option, he might be wise to take it.

His decision to stay behind and finish his studies is likely a very wise decision because I think his ability to have a long-term career (or one at all) in the pros is kind of, just like the chances of him putting up a bunch of passing yards, a long shot.

Kudos to you for finishing your education buddy... but i have to be honest and say that in my humble opinion, I don't really think you have what it takes to make it in the pros and therefore your announcement that you will not be seeking doing so, is kind of a moot point.

as a long term Notre Dame fan, i don't know if this is the best choice for him if he is offered a NFL contract but I do admire anyone who is dedicated to their college team. I knew who he was but had no idea he was so small. It seem unlikely to me that he could play pro ball at all at that size. There are some kickers that are bigger than he is.
