The FIFA "The Best" awards ceremony will be held for the fourth time this year, and the World Football Association on Wednesday released the names of the candidates who will be hoping to win the prestigious title on September 23, at an event to be held in Milan.
In this year's nominee list, European champion Liverpool has three representatives in the form of Virgil Van Dyke, Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane. On the other hand, Champions League finalist Tottenham has only one representative in Harry Kane's form.
Other candidates are of course the two stars who have been nominated for each title for more than a decade, Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi, who have won championships in Italy and Spain. Who is left unsurprisingly is last year's winner, Luca Modrich, who went through a badly personal and team season with Real Madrid. However, his new Blancos teammate, Eden Hazar, is nominated after leading Chelsea to win the European League.
Ajax, who recorded a great season with a championship win and reached the Champions League semi-finals, has two representatives who will no longer play in the media this season: Frankie de Jong who moved to Barcelona, and Mats de Licht from Juventus. Who completes the list is Killian Ambapa, who won the French Championship with Paris Saint-Germain and finished as the French league's scorer.
