The 32-year old who announced his retirement via a lengthy social media post joins the likes of Mesut Ozil, Mario Gomez and David Silva who have all retired from national team football in recent weeks.

Mandzukic who was part of the historic Croatian team that won Silver at the 2018 FIFA World cup in Russia said it was a very difficult decision but the successful world Cup campaign has given him more energy and determination to succeed.

The Former Bayern Munich man became the first man in the World Cup history to score an own goal and then score for his team in a World Cup final.

He capitalised on an error by French goalkeeper and captain, Hugo Lloris to pull a goal back for Croatia, after he inadvertently put the ball in the back of his own net to gift France the lead earlier on.

Mandzukic who was one time on the pay books at Atletico Madrid was capped 89 times by Croatia and scored 33 goals.
